straw/ 2 quart WBS questions
    #4291031 - 06/13/05 01:45 PM (11 years, 5 months ago)

My friends monkey is new to staw. He thinks that there is not enough holes in the plastic covering the straw birdseed mix. Since it's tucked into the sides of the container, he wants to know if he should remove the plastic, add holes, and replace it. Spank, the monkey, also was considering cutting slits ito the plasic with a steril blade while the plasic remains on the substrate. Any suggestions?

Also, spank was curious about using two left over quart jars of colonized birdseed as spawn for a small straw batch. he was considering using a five gallon bucket as the container. how much straw would you use for the two quarts of spawn, and does this sound like a good idea?

cut larger holes like 4 2/5inch holes and fill with polyfil or cover holes with tyvek. Polyfil can be found in your pillow and you can get free tyvek envelopes at the post office.

what should he do with the plastic, with inefficient holes, that is currently tucked in around the substrate. would removing the plastic drastically increase chance of contamination?

turn your oven up to about 200 degrees, open the door and pull the plastic off on the inside of the door. This will create an updraft disallowing contaminants to fall on your work area. Wash your hands very well with anti-bacterial soap and nuke the room with lysol before you do. That actually may be a little excessive, but you can never be too paranoid about sterility.
