I would wait to see if it spreads...it just looks like you have some spore clumps...I've seen little black specs sort of like that in jars before near where they were inoculated. They were right in the middle of where the first growth started, just like those.

I think it's spores.

Well sorry to bump an old topic, but for the past 2 batches of jars, I've used the same syringe and I've had black spots just like his. So I tossed 4 thinking it was a contam. But now I've got them again in these two jars. One shows quick mycelium growth and the other is a little bit slower but in the mycelium near the inoculation spots, they have little black spots. I've decided to let them grow out and if I see like half the jar taken over by black spots, I'm trashing them. But I'd like to see everyone's opinion if this is mold or just spore clumps. My syringe was very dark and thick and I wouldn't rule out it being spores. Thanks, Peace.

Anyone have an opinion? Please? I want to know if this growing is all in vain or if it's just spores. Please reply :frown:

I don't know how this relates...but I had one cake grow a small patch of mold and put it into an 'isolation chamber' Now the perlite has black spots that look similar to what you described. I have no explantion for it whatsoever. The first bag of perlite that beds my 11-cake terranium is totally white except for some random vermeculite.

I was wondering about the blackness on my perlite myself...I don't know if it relates to your cakes, though.
