The Virtues of Patience
    #4286421 - 06/12/05 11:12 AM (18 years, 9 months ago)

This is a spin off from woodspectors post on our fast world. I wanted to highlight what the virtues of patience are related to the development of human kind. It seems the world is loosing it as we grow to expect to get things more quickly via the ease and conveniences of technological advancements.

If you can think of any, please share them here.

Off the top of my head, having patience helps us to not "snap" at people we care about. Ever notice how if you are waiting for something with others and the wait grows long, someone if not everyone gets snappy and grumpy.

Patience in those cases allows for us to keep focus on enjoying the company we are with while waiting. Slipping into impatience robs us of that.

In the case of projects, impatience can lead to doing a slop job maybe even resulting in someone getting hurt latter from poor construction or our being very disappointed with the final outcome, realizing, if we had been patient enough to take the time to do it thoughtfully, we could've done a much better job and have been happier with the results we may have to live with for years.

Some projects that are rushed through due to impatience can come out so poorly they have to be scraped all together and then having to do it over just resulted in taking more time between the two then if it would of just not been rushed in the first place.

Not being patient can waste more time, not speed it up in those cases.

The phrase "haste makes waste" applies to that one.

Those are just off the top of my head.

The virtues of patience I think are well worth taking time to consider as they seem to have a lot to do with what adds a measure of quality to our lives.

As our lives and time expectations speed up with technological advancements we may be trading in a lot of quality living for quantity living.

I know I wold rather have a few things or experiences of quality then many that are of little value. Knowing that about myself, it's important for me to pay attention to expectations for getting things done quickly. I could be robing myself blind of what I treasure and not realize it if I tend to live in impatience.

I wanted to specifically put focus on examining what it is we are loosing when we slip into impatience by considering the virtues of patience. Thank you for you inspiring it. Patience is my life issue to work on.

The Virtues of Patients

That's what my doctor always talks about... oh, uhm, 'patience'. Nevermind.

Republican Values:

1) You can't get married to your spouse who is the same sex as you.
2) You can't have an abortion no matter how much you don't want a child.
3) You can't have a certain plant in your possession or you'll get locked up with a rapist and a murderer.

4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.

Or it might.

Patience isn't always appropriate. Just like everything else. Sometimes you need to react quickly and impulsively.

I was hoping to hear more insight and arguments for making a case on maintaining the virtues of patience before they dissapear from our way of life.

I guess the insight could be looking at patience as a construction
involving aspect of time, knowledge and other variables?
If you do something repeatedly you'll be able to do it faster and
possibly as precise as if you take your time depending on your alertness.
Things can be perfected in an eternity :crazy2:

Funny egg!

I thought of another. When we loose patience we tend to become tense and our heart rate increases. That's not good for our overall health and heart. So, another virtue of practicing patience is that, it's beneficial to out health.

Hyper tension, high blood pressure and heart disease are major health issues in the western world.

yea, it seems that we have a limited number of heartbeats, so why spend them all in neurotic moments of impatience

Or how about the two bulls, one old and one young, looking down on the herd of fine cows in heat.  The young bull in his haste and excitement proclaims "Let's run down there and fuck one of those cows!".  The old bull considers this and replies, "Why don't we just walk down there and fuck them all?"

Seems to fit with patience somehow...

I believe the reason so many people (including myself  ) struggle with being patient is that we refuse to accept things the way they are.

When neurosis (insisting reality should be the way you want it to be) rears its' ugly head, we become impatient and intolerant.  Restless, blocked energy paces around our bodies like a caged lion.  We begin to feel the urge to push and snap and MAKE something change.

When I remember to breathe, relax, and let the energy flow through me, I can begin to enjoy my experience again.  When I forget this, I see the circumstances and people around me as unacceptable.
