Newbie needs help!!

This is my first attempt to grow mushrooms. I bought the Soul Food Machine from mushroom magic and I also got the air filter. I know it was a little pricey but I didn't feel like searching for all the materials. But when I got the kit it said that I need a pressure cooker. Do I or can I go without it. If I need one where would be the best and cheapest place to get one. Thanks Also any advice for a first time grower

Having a PC will make a LOT of difference.
Given the crazy shit you can grow without proper sterilization, I would go with th PC.
Places to get them vary, where do you live?

You could steam the jars for an hour. I do this with roughly 90% success. Yet, a PC would greatly reduce your risk of contamination.

Pc's get a lot hotter than just boiling water, that is why they are so much more effective at killing contams. Boiling also works. I have even used a microwave with mild success.

to steam them first mix all your substrate and pack it into the jars... if you have two-piece lids (with the circular band and flat part), follow the following:
1. put a rag on the bottom of the large pot you will be using for steaming (make sure you have a lid that fits nicely). if you have one of those fold-out metal vegitable steamers that fit in the pot you can just put the jars on top of that - the idea is to keep the bottom of your jars from too intense of a heat.
2. put your jars in, as many as you can fit in one layer and fill the pot up with water to about half-way up the jars.
3. bring water to a boil... reduce to a low-boil/simmer and put the lid on. wait 30mins - 1hr. i usually wait 30 mintues and have never had any contams.
4. i recommend you let your jars sit for 3 days, more if you want, less if you want just to see if any contams pop-up in your jars before you throw your spores in there. if you don't wanna wait, just wait overnight so the jars will be nice and cool when you innoculate.
i know if you don't have the two-piece lids that the pressure in your jars may cause them to crack whilst steaming if the lids are screwed tight, but i don't remember exactly what to do in that case since i've never experienced it .
