What is the longest time that you spent in your life with out any obligations?
Mine was one more than a year. After I finished highschool and before going into university (faculty), I spent a year doing NOTHING. It was the best year. I really found out who I was, without being distracted by social demands and standards. I was a lazy, parazitic son of a bitch, but I had a long rest, and I do mean REST, real rest, like rest in peace, RIP, like I've been burried and dead, rest from all the BS I've picked up in my childhood and teen years. The return to society didn't bring back the usual anxiety because I had found myself and nobody could take myself away from me

I think that it all depends on what kind of society you're in and what you require of yourself. In some countries the system will take care of you if you become "disfunctional" and you won't be thrown on the street & die of hunger. This means you don't have any requirements to fullfill to be able to countinue on your life as obligations can be looked as.
I've had a simular kind of rest as the one you are speaking about living with my parents with good finances, I think it was for about a year also. They always expected me to do something usefull like go to school but for the last months there I didnt. So I moved to my girlfriend for awhile. Then I was out of money, the relationship ended and I had to go back home and get a job Good days, I only wish I would have used them more wisely

Never. I left High School for the Army where my time was always managed. After the Army I got married and children soon followed. I never needed to find myself since who I am is merely a set of learned responses that I can manipulate with some success.

i've experienced different ways of bottoming out over the past ten years. i learned something each time. i definately understand where you're coming from. i've never gotten it all out in one go. maybe that's what life is supposed to be for me or maybe i'm a slow learner. how long ago was that year?

I am just now begining to take my rest. My wife continued sleeping with my best friend and didn't even try to hide it from me. The worst part was I couldn't get anywhere near her the whole time. I am still a virgin (for Christ's sake of course). I sat by a long long time in lonely silence. Now she is gone, God bless her. I have this theory that failed relationships are just messages saying we have more to learn about ourselves before we find our True Love.
BUT
Let's get to the point - let's roll another joint. Fuck Hollywood. Sleep now in the Fire.

The learnted responses thing is interesting. I think the Army took part in helping you come up with that.

The longest I've went is a few months with no obligations. Those were times when I de-stressed and centered myself. I did this every few months in college also. I would buy a quarter of pot, and do nothing but smoke and think and relax for a few days. During these times it was common for me to not even leave my apartment for 4-5 days straight, with no human contact. Just me, alone, doing nothing. Bliss. These periods help greatly to set my focus on what I plan to do after I'm done doing nothing. With all the noise of society going on around you constantly it's hard to focus on what you really want out of life and where you plan to go next. At least, that's what I've found.

Very Very Cool.
I have taken a year off of working several times. It's always great time spent. My transformations take place in both spaces and I learn alot from both. But I definately like time off working. I enjoy play and can't imagine being bored without work like some folks.

my longest time off is about 3 years, i was living in my own world pretty much, very lazy and down, depressed, then one day i decided i would go for a job interview, applied for only 1 job, in the next hour of applying for it i had an interview, and got the job. i am glad i have this job i love it but if i didn't have all that time off i don't think i would enjoy life as much as i do now.

I think what you said is what goes on when someone takes time to find themselves. We grow up being manipulated form the people in our environments who want to shape us to fit their purposes, parents, friends, religions, schools, lovers.
If and when people find themselves, what is really happening is what you talked about. They start to peal away the things about them that others wanted them to be and begin identifying who and what it is they want to be.
Some people like you can do it while in influential environments and some do it better when they remove themselves from their former environments of influence. The same thing is happening though.
The expression of "finding oneself" is really more of a transition from letting others tell us who we are and what we are to be all about to making those decisions for ourselves.

So the One who never has to find their Self, is the One devoid of layers to be peeled away. Simple. People have escaped conditioning, you know?? Coyotl is ahead of the curve my friends. One who never strays from their personal path is unconditioned. Going to the Army in search can strengthen the commitment to Be. Often Individuals escape the Army to be stronger individually, contrary to the brainwashing of most. These are the Strong. This is the Self.

Yup! Some have a strong will from early on in child hood that helps. Some are born to strong willed parents that break them into being what they want.
So yes, our early personal strength of will and the strength of those we are reared and influenced by along the way plays a big part in who has how many external fabricated layers to peal away and who may have next to none.
A lot of people compromise who they would prefer to be or what they more naturally are for money, love and acceptance.
Some people who use to compromise themselves a lot one day say fuck it, it's not worth it, and then go about creating themselves for themselves.
And consider when you deal with small children, some just seem to come into this world very strong wiled and others weak willed. The waker willed ones have much more to over come if they are to have the experience of being self created and realised.

I'm currently in this phase, it sucks, it really does.

What part about it sucks? I remember a little turbulence related to a few who I came to realize had conditions on me being what they wanted me to be. At the same, realizing who didn't was awesome. Ultimately, you come more into your power and it's a good thing. Redefining yourself to suit yourself is really worth it.
It gives you more ground to stay standing on when life starts pushing you around.

It's hard to try to "redefine yourself" when you're isolated from everyone, and all you want is to be near to people, being a social animal and all.

So the question is why the isolation?
