Freedom of Speech

To what extension do you believe this should be applied?
Should holocaust deniers have the right to publish written material on the subject without legal provision?
Should radical Islamists have the right to publish material that justifies the September 11th Attacks?

Anybody should be allowed to say whatever they please.

What about lying about a person's quality of work in order to make them lose jobs?

Isn't that simply libellious?

I was asking bellylard.
But yes I believe it would be. However wouldn't absolute freedom of speech encompass that as well?

Should yelling "fire" in a crowded movie theatre be protected as expression?

Questions like that I think make it difficult to absolutely define freedom of speech.

Well, clearly there is a difference between expression and speech that is libellious, or dangerous (speech that advocates criminal activity). Personally I believe people should have the right to be libellious, and to advocate criminal activity. The crowded theatre thing, I don't know.

Freedom of speech should only be limited when the speech itself is a criminal act (libel, for instance) or will lead to immediate lawless behavior (yelling fire or bomb in a theatre).

will lead to immediate lawless behavior
So saying, "here smoke this joint" should be illegal?

Well, by passing someone a joint, I'll infer that you were smoking it. You're already breaking the law, so law-breaking speech is not the problem here.

Get on the last seat on a roller coaster, then as you are going up the hill start yelling "OH MY GOD. MY SEAT IS LOSE! STOP THE RIDE! STOP THE RIDE!" Do it on a ride where the mobility of the riders is such that they can't move their heads completely around to see you. If young women are in front of you they can very excited. It adds a bit of spice to the situation, but you may get assaulted on the exit ramp. Blame it on your buddy sitting next to you.

Cosmopolitan,
Aside from the obvious illegal activities, IE dangerous or libelous, your examples of freedom of speech are the fundamental spirit of the freedom of speech. If this was a fundamentalist Christian site, and your examples were atheist pamphlets, or even circulars touting the saftey of psychedellics, there'd most likely be knee jerk reactions saying how that isn't right.
The freedom of speech is the ability to say what you want, while the guy next to you says everything you've spent your entire life disagreeing with.

As so many have said, yes, and yes to both questions. No matter how odious or offensive we may find something, that still does not give us the right to silence the speaker. If we censor one, we censor all.....

There should be no limits to speech, spoken or written. Libel and slander should be handled personally, and copyright laws should also be abolished.

Yea, lets abolish intellectual property, and return to a hunter gatherer society!

Remember you are only free in as far as you don't infringe on someone elses freedoms. That is why you can't yell fire in a theater or make slanderous remarks.
