Good point. It's just as I said. I know some people that would call that lying. They would say that if you included why you weren't on time the judge may not of excepted that as a valid reason. So.. There you have it. You might not be able to live up to someone elses ideas of truth. But in the end it's a judgement call. If you feel totally comfortable with it and you would want, lets say, your children to use that logic with you in something you deemed important. Then you would not be lying. I guess.

I was also hoping, however, that the judge wouldn't ask me what the previous engagement was because then I would have to tell the truth.
I had a trial this past Monday for which I wasn't prepared because I had forgotten about it. This was very bad. I had become very busy with my practice starting last January. My caseload has grown immensely, and in a short period of time. I have never had this happen.
I consulted with someone about lying. I didn't want to go to court and tell the truth about why I wasn't prepared and why I needed a continuance. Asking to continue a trial is a very bad thing and highly frowned upon. I really, really wanted to lie. Luckily, the person I spoke with doesn't lie.
So I went to the hearing and told the truth. I groveled. It was embarassing. But the trial was continued, although I had to pay the other party's attorney's fees for that morning. That sucked.

Yep. Your in a tough profession. But we all make those choices everyday in little or big ways.
Well, I lie often. Mostly little stuff, but still lies. What I try to do is take responsibility for my lying (admit to myself that I am choosing to lie) and accept what ever the result of my lying is, good or bad. Tough stuff sometimes.
Also I forgive myself when I lie and don't like it. No sense adding one mistake to another.
