whazz up,
after watching, reading, and absorbing I have a few questions. First off today(06/10/05) I used a spawn bag, from myco supply, to sterilize a 50/50 Poo/verm mix. The first on went 90min@15psi and I toasted it. The second went 60min@15psi and the bag survived it's just really messed up; what did I do?
While on the subject of poo/verm, has anyone played with the ratio's. in specific less poo more ver, something like 3:1 or 4:1?
Finally I've been running a TIT incubator with great succes, albeit real hot or cold days messes with the internal thermostat of the heater and the temp jumps a bit but comes back to between 85-90 degrees(F). The bottom of my grain jars however do not want to colonize, even after shaking. Is the inner tubs floor too hot? I will send pic's later(brother has some dirty pics on the shared digital camera, i don't wanna see)

Hey, hope some of the above info. is just misuse of words, but after rereading I'm afraid maybe not. Who told you to PC poo? You want to pasteurize it. Just "clean it up" a little without killing everything. Kinda like PC'ing a BRF jar, and then opening it up, dumping in a bowl, mixing in some colonized WBS and expecting it to do anything but change pretty colors of the rainbow. You only want to kill certain things while allowing others to help keep the poo somewhat contam resistant. Think about it, outside you don't ever really see all kinds of wierd growth on poo. Most the stuff I've seen while gathering poo pretty much looks the same. That helpful qualility is one of the things that make it a good choice for a substrate. That and it's cheap as shit,lol. You may have killed all the helpful bacteria's and such. Not good. Poo should not go above 180 degrees. You had it at about 255 degree's.
You'll have to get better control of your TIT. Poo produces a lot of internal heat while colonizing and needs to be kept at a slightly lower temp. I keep mine between 79-80 degree's.
I really need to know why you PC'd your poo.

I pc'd the poo because all three jars that were left were not colonized on bottom. one showed major signs of wetspot. the other two had a couple of spots that were questionable. I should have let the jars soak the full 24 hours.
by the way I do know about helpful micro-organism's. I'm still perfecting pasturization.

what do your jars have to do with PCing your poo? Like what gave u the idea to PC it? All the teks about poo are very specific about pasteuration procedures.

You are correct! the few poo tek's i have read involving poo dicourage sterilization. however jars showing any sign of contamination made me nervous enough to PC rather than screw with pasturizing. besides it was only one bag and it was experimental anyways.
I think I finally figured out the trick to my hotplate. when I put material into my pot of water, the temp jumps 20 degrees.

Well just so you know, if there were any contams in the jars...
1) you wouldnt want to spawn with it and
2) contams love a sterile nutritious substrate where they dont have to compete with the beneficial bacteria.
Pasteurization provides more contam resistance than sterilization

Though, I've known of a few people who PC'd their poo with no problems.
IMO pasteurization is better with things like manure and straw.

So back to my original Q's
Who knows about how much heat a spawn bag can withstand(psi for PC's)?
Has anyone experimented with using less poo and more vermiculite? results?
