Psilocybe venenata - Japan
    #4276541 - 06/09/05 03:22 PM (18 years, 9 months ago)

Photo from Japan of wild Psilocybe venenata. The photo color seems a bit off to me with those wild purple gills.

Image of first pin of cultivated Psilocybe venenata grown outdoors. I was able to convince the Japanese collector to send me a few gill fragments in an envelope. The mycelium is slow growing and thin on malt agar resembling P. baeocystis mycelium. Grass seed spawn was transfered to sterilized horse manure and then transfered to an outside bed when fully colonized. The patch was covered with twigs and wood debris in the early spring. Today the first pin was observed and upon closer examination a second large stump was found near the first. The initial pin is severely slug damaged (hidden on the back of the mushroom) and the stump is all that is left of the 2nd mushroom. Bluing is noted on the damage areas Slug killing bait has been placed around the mushrooms and hopefully more will emerge in the next few days.

This is pretty exciting since I wasn't even sure that the mycelium that was isolated from the gill fragments was even correct or that horse manure would support fruiting. I expect a good autumn harvest.

Thanks. The slug bait decimated hundreds of slugs which left slime everywhere as they died. I don't think that will be a problem but it looks pretty gross. Already I see a few new pins and the weather is cool and drizzly. For some reason this species seems exceptionally attractive to the slugs and I think they were cropping them down to the ground daily. It was pure chance I noticed even one. Expect some new images in 7-10 days with luck.

Nice work. Put a bunch of pennies around your mushroom patch. Slugs hate to crawl over copper.

This is a good idea if done immediately after making the patch. Unfortunately, there were probably more slugs inside the patch that in the surrounding area. A ring of pennies would merely corral them in. The damaging slugs are introduced species (black and milky slugs) from europe and I have no qualms about killing invasive species (yeah, yeah I know I am introducing potentially invasive fungal species, so sue me).

I counted 5 new pins today and two new stumps. I am still losing some to the bastids.

i read about this stuff that you spread on the ground and it is like crushed up something. anyways it doesn't hurt your shrooms but it is very abrasive so when the slugs crawl over it they get cut thousands of times and dry out. I wish i could remember its name

accoring to http://www.haywardm.supanet.com/pesticides.html

# Dead slugs & snails left for a few days in water to ferment.
# Dead slugs & snails ground up & diluted with water - potentised homeopathic spray - sprinkled over garden.

so catch a few and chop there heads of and place them on spikes like in medieval times and by by slugs.

and according to http://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profiles0700/slugs.asp

A biological control specific to slugs, with no adverse effect on other types of animal, is available in the form of a microscopic nematode or eelwom that is watered into the soil. The nematodes (Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita) enter slugs' bodies and infect them with bacteria that cause a fatal disease.

If your looking for diatomaceous earth, you might want to ask at Swimming Pool Supply stores, its used in many of the large filter units, and you can buy replacement media for them.

Just a thought

Slugs and snails love beer. If you leave a bucket of slops in your garden they will all crawl in and drown.
