Are my friends a part of a cult?
    #4280180 - 06/10/05 03:39 PM (11 years, 5 months ago)

The other day I asked a friend about two of our high school friends named Mike and Hillary who are now married and moved away.  He said that the last time he talked to them, they were involved in some pyramid scheme and that they were convinced they would soon be rich.  This is surprising because they're pretty smart people, IMO.

My friend said that Mike and Hillary invited him to a convention for this pyramid scheme.  I believe he said it was  Quixtar.  He said the whole thing was very centered around religion somehow.  I assume that Quixtar is attempting to transfer everyone's faith in religion to faith in Quixtar.  He also said that the people who claimed to now be millionaires were dressed like scrubs.

The funniest and most disturbing thing my friend told me about this scam is that he was riding in Mike and Hillary's car once and they were playing this CD that has top 40 hits........only the songs are changed to incorporate Quixtar related propaganda!  He said one of the songs was "I get knocked down, but I get up again.  You're never gonna keep me down." except with Quixtar propaganda mixed in.  Man, I would LOVE to have this CD.  It's obviously made to re-enforce Quixtar propaganda in a way that's more enjoyable and familiar for the listener.  :ooo:

Man, this would be hilarious if it hadn't happened to my friends.  The CD thing is what really got me.  I need to get that disk!  :ooo:  I wonder if the guy who runs this thing is named "The Leader" and if he knows all and sees all.  It sounds like he's brainwashed my friends.

Sounds a bit "Heaven's Gate-ish" to me. I'd smack some sense into them, and quick!

And send me a copy of that CD. It sounds really funny.

It that what it actually says!? Haha I can just imagine someone trying to sing that. It's amazing to see how many people can fall victim to something like propaganda.

Hell, I'm sure I do all the time...actually I'm kinda in the mood for a McDonald's hamburger...mmm

Some people are so selfish.

Suicide is a tricky subject. I mean on the one hand, I believe that individuals should have autonomy over their own body's, but on the other hand, losing someone from the human race is also a very sad thing.

True, plus ultimately we're all bound to die, but that doesn't mean that it's not sad to lose a brother from this plane.

By the way, funny image in your sig.

One of my friends (David) got involved in that Quixstar (get it, quick-star??) pyramid scheme last year and called me up about it. He told me he was gonna make a lot of money, etc. So he came over to my place and told me a little more about it, then asked if I was interested. He said it wasn't a pyramid, because I kept asking him over and over. I told him ok, I was interested but I needed more info.

So a couple weeks later I meet him and his mentor at this Chik-Fil-A to talk some more. The mentor let me look at this cheesy booklet about how the whole thing works. There were pictures of people driving ferraris and big boats and a mansion with tag lines like "It's all possible...." I knew when I heard the guy talk there was no way I was gonna get into this. But I played along to humor myself. He said all the clothes he wore were from Quixstar along with almost everything else him and his wife owned. He said that you basically own your own business and what can be better than buying stuff you need from your own business or some shit like that. I was like whatever ok. He gave me some more pamphlets to read and we decided to meet another time. I told him I had some more people that might be interested. At this point however, I just wanted to make a joke out of him. My other friends would definitely try to call him out and laugh at him so I knew it would be hilarious.

So another week goes by and I could only get 2 friends to show up for the last meeting, which was at my house. He brings David and another disciple. The disciple brings in one of those easels that you can write on and sets it up in the living room. I thought to myself "Oh man here we go...." If only my brother and Eddie were here to see this..." But dammit they couldn't make it. So the guy goes on and on about how Quixstar sells directly to the public without going through some middleman or whatever. I think a lot of what he said made sense but it still seemed like a pyramid scheme to me. So after awhile he was done and he tries to get us to go to this convention at this hotel and I played along and said maybe, etc. Another week goes by and I am supposed to meet David at the hotel but never answer the call. And that was the end of that.

What's weird is David is a smart guy and I don't know how he got suckered into it. Anyways you have to pay money to start up, etc so I said forget that. They never mentioned anything about religion though.
