Who's In Charge Here?
    #4279992 - 06/10/05 02:50 PM (11 years, 11 months ago)

Applying the concept of personal responsibility has been transformative for me.

When I was first challenged to consider the "choice factor," and began examining my statements for "can't" and "have to," as well as "___________(insert outside influence) made me feel this way," it shook me to the foundations of my self-concept.

I believe this process is central to personal growth, and that denial of personal responsibility creates a blind spot which obscures any study of spirituality or philosophy.

I want to add something to give a new perspective on what we are doing when we use the word can't. CAN'T Choose Again Not To.

Often when we say that we can't do something, it is not that we actually physically can not do it, it's that we are choosing not to do it for whatever reason.

Looking to the actual reason for choosing again not to, can help us uncover where we may be in avoidance or denial of dealing with something about ourselves.

Yes! In fact, a communications professor at my University challenged us to substitute "I choose not to" for each instance in which we would otherwise have said can't, but we actually could.

It was powerful to make this change, particularly when it came to declining social invitations! It felt SO rude to say, "Thank you for asking me, but I am choosing to spend that evening with my son."

I have integrated this language alteration into my speech habits, and I find it has changed the way I think about how I "compose" my life. When I realize that there are any number of things that I could do, but choose not to, I feel free and empowered.

declining social invitations is big.  being honest requires that you know yourself enough to be able to respond to inquisition.  'why don't you want to come? etc'

i don't understand what responsibility has to do with spirituality specifically , am interested

I remember getting counseling for my personal problems when I was about 20 years younger. Before counseling, I was blaming others for where I was in life. Because of counseling, I learned to accept responsiblity for where I was in life, which at the same time caused me to make better decisions because I couldn't blame anyone else any more for where I was.

Since then, I have made better decisions. When I make a bad decisions, I figure out where I screwed up and move on.

Self realization and empowerment, i.e., bettering oneself and one's experience of life, an increase in basic understanding of one's environment around oneself, have absolutely nothing to do with spirituality.

To clarify.
