i have been researching about using casings with colonized pftek jars. i am seeing so much variety of how people incubate and fruit them. i just wanna know once and for all, from experience, what do yal think is the most effective way to use casings. what i have at the moment is put perlite on the bottom of a case break up ur pf jars in baggies and spread on the perlite then put a layer of moist verm on top. but i dont know incubation temp/rh or fruiting temp/rh. someone answer these please, once and for all... :smile:

perilite? essh, not necessary. there doesnt need to be a bottom casing layer. use peatmoss/verm in a 1:1 ratio for casing material. make sure your container is solid so you dont initiate pinning on the bottom.

and about the perilite thing, keep in mind that all you put in your casing/substrate will end up in your final product, and since perilite is toxic, i wouldnt suggest it. If it isnt food grade or neutral, dont use it.

Use the 50/50+. Meaning you need a PH buffer.
Read this:
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/1041528/an/0/page/0

You can use a bottom casing layer.. just the same as whatever you put on top. If you have a small casing .. don't incubate it for too long. Usually a day.. day 1/2 ..thats all you need. But it will vary depending on size of casing and strain. The myc will continue to grow after it is placed in the fruiting chamber..

Oh.. be sure to break them up enough so that you can make an even substrate layer. The more even (flat) it is.. the beter your pinset chances.

Good luck

No it's not. I've seen 3 people use perlite as a Substrate and it worked fine.

And no, you don't need anything on the bottom, esp. for pftek.

Most people (from what I've read) , put a small amount on the bottom (just to where it covers the bottom) so that it will soak up any extra moisture...But that's when they thought that their grains wre to wet ect ect.

I don't use it though..

yes it is toxic. dont believe me then go grab a handfull and eat some.

anything that gets colonized, with the exception of neutral materials like vermiculite and other stone-based substances, will end up in your final product. whether its in trace amounts or toxic amounts depends. Im sure the ignostic meant was that perilite didnt yeild a noticable toxic mushroom, though just because you cant sense it doesnt mean it isnt there. better be safe than sorry.

My point was, it isn't enough to hurt you.

I've acidently eaten some =/...lol

Plus I've seen people use 25% in their Pf tek jars...

And eat the mushrooms off that with no posion-like side-effects.

That's all I was getting at.

What "toxins" does it have anyways? As in Chemical Properties..:cool:

Just my 2 cents...

I believe it isn't toxic but its made from volcanic rock that can be dangerous because of little shards that float around when working with it that you breath in a cut your inners up with.

Also, perlite doesn't absorb... it drains. That's why its in planting soil. Vermiculite retains water and absorbs it. I may be completely wrong so correct me if I'm wrong.

Verm = Mica.

Perlite - Volcanic rock...Def. don't think so.

Perlite = Wicks out water.

Verm = Absorbs.
