my friends caseings are bluing or so she says as I have never seen them. She said that they were kept overly warm (80 degrees +). I have read several things here namely that this could be moisture problems ie; not enough? or heat problems. WHich is it?

the cakes are cased. I don't have anything compare "rough" to since this is her first time. They were coming along nicely as white myc. and then started bluing recently as they were pinning.

All I can say is that blue is nothing to worry about. Most likely just bruising.

I'm no expert, but I have several cakes fruiting now, and a few of them had substansial blueing where I had handled them but it went away after they started pinning.

a few thoughts on contams, gleaned from others... bluing can indicate over-handling or lack of proper moisture. are you sure its blue and not green? green-blue could be a contam- does it wipe off when touched with a napkin? (yes=green mold). if its not green... flushes often rob the casing of moisture... they can shrink and blue.

How much of the casing is covered with mycelium - it sounds like a lot?... Is it just the myc that has turned blue? or the casing too?
