NOW WHAT!
    #4277311 - 06/09/05 08:37 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

steralize some jars via pressure cooker, jars tip in cooker, wich cause water content to increase in jars(just some spots that looked muddy or oatmeal like, most of the cakes are still normal in a ppearence, wet mainly on the outside of the substrate), and one was to inoculate them anyway. What are the chances of still having a healthy cake? What kind of problems does to mucher water cause? Thanks for any suggestions.

Excess water can stall mcy. and make it take forever and a day to colonize that spot, if at all. and excess water can cause wet spot bacteria. If too much water made it into the jars it might be easier to start over(if you have more supplies) instead of waiting extra weeks for the area to colonize.

There is the possibility that you can cut that spot out when you birth, but this still opens the door for contams...

Good luck...

Beside stalling, contams love it when its to wet.Save your spores and start over.  GL

I threw mine out when they got like that... I tried birthing them after like 20 days and it was just nasty.. Mine looked just like the ones in the picture except only one like one side or the lower side.. This was because i took the AL foil of the cans to let air in to dry them out before inoculation.. This worked somewhat but they still never caught up and ended up junk.. That's what happened to me.. Luckily it was only like 6 jars out of 24:)

hmmm alot of mixed suggestions/info. But I appreciate all the help!! All my foaf can do now is wait! But you guys mentioned taking the lids off? He has foil on them. Should he take the foil off...and what is tyvek?

Gatorade, that is exactly what it looks like but with alot more dry areas. Thanks again guys, appreciate it!

waixengren: did the cakes turn out?

I feel bad for that jar... I don't have the heart to toss him. He's still contam free so I don't feel the need too. Hes about 30% colonized while the others are around 70-80%, so he's doing better then how it looked then.

I haven't tried the open lid idea yet... maybe today I will. Tyvek sounds like it could work well... may give it a shot.

Yea, don't chunk it. Just start something else and move on.

Just keep an eye on it for contams.

What would one do now???? [Re: CLUTCH]
    #4348104 - 06/28/05 10:12 PM (12 years, 25 days ago)

So the wet jars had continued to colonize slowly but surely and the mycelium just seems to get thicker and whiter. My friend of a friend decided to quikly open the foil lids for a quick air exchange. But he noticed three pins growing in a jar, so now I ask what is one to do in this case...other than the fact that its wet the cake is healthy and the pins appear the same. He hadnt opened that jar for air exchange he had me ask you guys here at the good ol' shroomery for some advice  I gave my foaf this advice, sterilize your glovebox open the jar inside, remove the part thats refusing to colonize, wait a few days, and dunk! Does this sound like a good idea for him to do?
