Prefilters and HEPA units

I seem to be having a hard time locating a prefilter to fit a 12"x36"x1" slot on the back of a HEPA unit. I contacted the company that made the HEPA unit and it seems they only sell in large quantities and only to businesses........which leaves me stuck.
I've looked for furnace filters and THIS and THIS is what I keep finding.
Will these kind of furnace filters work as a prefilter? They have both of those in the size I need......or should I call a HVAC place and talk with them? Any help is appreciated

A furnace filter isn't all that great. Most I have seen an ant could walk right though.
Meaning, so could a lot of big nasties.
But, you can cheaply alter one to be much more effective.
If you have a furnace filter that fits?
Go to a large FABRIC store & eyeball white polyester backing cloth material that is on rolled bolts. It comes in various thickness's & is simply spunbonded polyfil (not woven).
Buy a yard (or whatever) of what you think is a good air filter thickness - that will not restrict air flow (to much) & simply tape it with GOOD TAPE (tightly) to the underside of the furnace filter & slide it into the prefilter slot.
That should do you

You could also just use a cut to size furnace filter. Some are fairly decent quality. I had to use a cut to size filter once for just this purpose. Hood worked well for over 5 years before I lost touch with it's owner.

I'll bet you could get a 12 x 12 and a 12 x 24 and just run a piece of duct tape between them to splice them together. I just use one of these super allergen type furnace filters over the intake of the squirrel cage fan. It at least gets all the big dirt and hair, bugs, etc. RR

I looked for some last time I was at the store, but didn't see any. I'll have to go look for some tomorrow. Sounds like it works good.

Thats what I did this evening. Fits pretty well. I didn't know if these filters would be enough by themselves or not.
Gotta take care of that HEPA filter

its too as as there are very nice prefilters, such as this baby here:

but a nice polyfill filter, like agar said, will do very well also. peace ohm

two things that are available in my country are: vacuumcleener filters (both prefilters and hepas). easily available, cheap and reasonable quality.
and the filters for the kitchen fan (the one over the stove). these are slightly more costly.

heh. i had the same problem with the same damn sized filter. i found a HVAC supplier who ordered them for me. i think it was ~$45 for a dozen. The big clinch was that a communication breakdown had occured and I received the wrong size. Seeing as the order took some 6 wks to fill i just bought some 1"X1" wood stripping, cut the filter with a razor and stapled in the stripping for support.
