the path to adept is long and arduous. I'm warning all of you.
you say you wanna be enlightened huh? You say you want to know god? Let me give you a few hints of what you will encounter:
loss: everything you love will turn against you. say goodbye to everything that makes you happy. Once they have been wrenched away from you, you will realize you never needed them.
insanity: you will begin to hear voices. you will become unsure of what is real and what isn't. You will see a million different ways to interpret every sentence, and you will always be unsure of what people really mean when they say things. A consequence of relativity.
pain: the physical pain will be turned up so high that eventually you will just stop paying attention to it.
ridicule: the people around you will begin to talk. they will not understand your quest. they are too busy chasing money and sex to realize what real strength is. eventually you must learn to ignore their mockery.
blasphemy: less advanced seekers on the path will eventually find you and call you their master. You must turn them away and tell them to seek their own truth.
demons: those who mistake kindness for weakness and inaction with disability will attempt to make you their prey. they will rob and steal, they will bruise and batter. fight them if you have to, but the more advanced you become, the more you will just laugh at their attempts to hurt you in this, the physical and least important plane.
death: yes, no matter how close and in sync you are with God, you are still going to die. But if you are enlightened by then, you won't care. What is death? It could be a doorway to something better, or it could be eternal nothingness. But the adept careth not: the outcome of a coinflip means little to him.
is there a reward for all of this? who knows? who cares? the journey is the reward. pay as you go so you won't be in debt.

Oh, how true my mindful friend! I am currently relapsing into the need to escape it all. I frequently ask myself "When will I die, so that I can be free from this ignorance?", yet I wish not to commit suicide. I cannot bring an understanding to my girlfriend on these matters. The closest I got was a rant that I had when we were on mushies. It went on for about 4 hours. At the time she understood, but now she "chooses" not to. She's bought and sold at the market, and she is lead by other "truths".

no and no.
but for me life is a grueling deathmarch across sharp crags of jutting rocks. I stumble and fall, broken and bruised. I fall to my knees and crawl, until one day I will finally collapse. But still, I thank God everyday.
some day you'll see things my way.

no one can tell you what would work or what it would be like for you. Each man must cut his own path. If you follow you will only end up where someone else wanted to be. You are the guide. You have been given the gifts of passion and intuition. Use them wisely and you will find your way.

IMHO, life on "the path" is what we talk ourselves into. You are choosing your experience with your expectations and globalizations.
Why should life be misery and hardship? Why not allow it to be whatever it is?
When we open to possibility, a vista is revealed to us, and we can perceive thatlife is full of beauty and joy.
The difficulties can be molehills if we do not persist in making them into mountains or "sharp crags of jutting rocks."
I choose to live in awareness of beauty and pleasure, and seek enjoyment in my daily life.

IMO racing into it in an unballanced way results in the chaos described above, but proceeding at a pace that addresses the fact that we are all already on this path, helps reconnect one to all aspects rather than separates one from the universe.
attachment is not such a big deal. only attachment will be lost.
