Bacterial Blotch; I Need The Truth! (Pics)
    #4274928 - 06/09/05 07:09 AM (16 years, 5 months ago)

I've been searching through this contamination forum looking for information regarding the hazards of eating completely dried mushrooms that were previously infected with bacterial blotch.

I've come across answers ranging from: "Whatever you do, DON'T eat them," to "When the shrooms are completely dried, the bacteria will be dead." I researched the effects of getting infected by Pseudomonas tolaasii, and they seem very severe (most cases I read about were people being infected via unsanitized piercing needles, etc...)

I need a definitive answer! A FOAF has some mushies that have a slight bacterial blotch (see pics below), but he simply can't bring himself to throw them away. Any help you can give is greatly appreciated! If you have experience eating mushrooms that were infected with bacterial blotch, please share your information.

One more thing... I don't mean to sound like a dick, but I really don't want any replies that say "When in doubt, throw it out!" I need either a "Yes, bacterial blotch is a dangerous infection and the mushrooms MUST be thrown out," or "They're SAFE to eat once dried." Thanks in advance for your help...

Oh brother.
Bacterial endospores can't germinate inside a human. The danger is food poisoning from live bacteria. Dried mushrooms can't possibly have live bacteria, so they're safe to eat. Whenever you're in doubt, simply boiling will kill any live bacteria, but it's totally unnecessary with dried fruits.

I'm curious what relevance bacterial endospores that are endemic to certain grains have to do with bacterial blotch which is caused by rotting mushroom tissue. He's not asking about eating animal feed corn that has not been sterilized, he's asking about blotch on a mushroom cap. There will be no endospores present.

RR, you've been a great help! Thank you very much for sharing your wisdom. The mushrooms were eaten and no ill effects manifested whatsoever. Thanks again!
