GA Pannaleous Subbalteatus
    #4273821 - 06/08/05 11:44 PM (11 years, 5 months ago)

Check your horse fields people. I found my largest pan . today.

Cap: 1.2 inches diameter
Gills: Dark or black
Stem: Long, thicker, white turning to brown, Hollow.
Print: Jet black.

And right next to them were some pan foes, which came out to be a lighter print, maybe brownish.
I'm glad I learned the difference today between what really is a sub. I only found three but the knowledge is most helpful.

There IS NO other mushroom that looks like a pan sub, with the stem and print that I described, is there? I'm pretty sure I got the real deal.
Sorry no camera.
Oh ya, went fishing for something else today and came up empty.
:mushroom2:

wading through the grass, a cat and some scratch.
looking for mana, swift eye scannin the manor, for some patch.
sticks wading, down to horse shit my sandals fading.
sinking deeper, I think about gaining what I'm training.
switchin high ground to the low, I did a little scape-ing.
swift walking, mushrooms kept popping out of nowhere talking.
through the woods do I dare care, back in bug-land I'll stare,
right at them, mist under leaves going for the sun they sat there.
Picked them up in my bag of fun, I tossed them to the lot,
and I'll see them when they decide to pop!

From what you've said, it seems like you've got pan subbs.

I thought so. It's a shame you need 20 to trip........(?)

Actually, it's quite unheard of people tripping off or cultivating pan subbs so the info comes slowly here.
I'd like to hear experiences and dosage reports, dry, and wet. No one really knows much about the bio-essay so it's not a very target mushroom.

Panaeolus subbalteatus!!... I never can spell that one right.

Are you saying that what I described could be a Panaeolus cinctulus, or just correcting it.

I hit up google and this is what I came up with for Panaeolus cinctulus

That is not what I found... is that the only look alike with a jet black spore print? Are pan Cincs active and what color is the print?

He's saying they're one and the same, synonymous.

The stem did not have all those white dots on it, and the cap was colored differently. But It looks pretty similar, with a jet-black print.
Just how much does the looks of a pan subb vary? Is it possible I found another strain of the pans with a black print?

Great link, thanks.

I went back out there today, and I searched a new field at the same place. I found tons of two different pan species. It is KILLING me not knowing which one is 100% subb, for sure.
I am testing them by printing for a long time. It's been one hour, they are in an airtight container after 4 hours or so I will check the prints and find out which mushroom truly is a subb.
I'm pretty sure I know which ones are the subbs. Twisty fibrous stems, gills below the level( like in the link) we will see when the prints come out.

Ps- I found a GIANT patch of Chamomile flowers.( you know, the herb they use in almost all herbal teas that help you sleep) Pounds and pounds of flowers... I picked a few clusters to bring home and dry.. I tried talking to the horse owner to tell him what was in his field but he was not home.

Ok, the prints came back JET BLACK!! For sure.
Plus the gill structure is pretty tight.
Someone please tell me what the dose is on these things... dry, and wet?

I held my wallet up to the prints, they came out black as my black leather. And dark, especially if I held them at an angle, it become total blackness.
To get a good print, you need about 5 hours, IMO.

The only thing that makes me wonder, is that the stems were not super thick. But not thin either. They were brown, except one of them was white at the top and brown at the bottom.
From what I read( great article by Gumby http://www.impakt.net/~tyler/subbs/) the stems are always brown, or is there variation?

There is only one way to find out.. eat them( no chance of poisoning either, at most, mild discomfort). Then I will know for sure. So I need to know how many for a small trip!! Anyone know? something like 1.5 grams cubes. Small, but feel able no doubt. Keep in mind I have not tripped in half a year so it will act fully. Anyone got dose reports or do these things vary so much from state to state it is impossible to tell?

I am curious as to how many people follow the advice of the dosage calculator.

I forgot all about finishing that site. I have a lot of pictures to put on there.

I just hope I didn't lose the layout and all my work on that site on my computer that I lost when my dorms caught fire last year.

As far as how variable P. subbalteatus can be... They have so many different shapes and colorations I wouldn't even say my finds are 100% without a microscope. IMHO, differentiating species in the Panaeolus genus is damn near impossible without a microscope. Subbs and antilarium(inactive) are the only ones that stick out like sore thumbs in my opinion. All the others it's just too hard to tell.

The best way to tell if your prints are truly black is to smear them around and look at the thin parts of spore deposit. If you printed them on white paper, the brown will look browner when the print is thinned out and not all clumped together.

I hope that made sense. I just got back from a cruise... aka a week of excessive drinking. I'm still feeling a bit crazy

I *SO* wish I had a camera today. Long story short I came home with about 150 pan subbs. Some of them were HUGE, silver dollar cap size. I'll give the rest of the report later. I've got to get ready, me and a friend are going to trip tonight :mushroom2: :crazy2:
Guys, I can't stress enough how PERFECT the N-GA weather has been for subbs. Almost heavenly. Just go look! GO NOW!( you've still got 30 minutes of light left ;0) or GO TOMORROW!

I ended up eating 17 grams fresh. About one hour later the full effects were shown. Spacey, far out, no visuals... According to the dosage calculator, 17 grams should have put me right above level 1.
Which is what I expected.

It was nice outside in the fields today.. Rain softly blowing steady, and horses that liked to play. The subbalteatus caps were showing, turned black by self printing. I'd go ten feet and find a twenty, and then go ten more to find another...
I've noticed that the subbs like a certain type of plant( that dies out early to create open ground among high plants). In a field were it down-slopes over three acres, most of the mushrooms were found in the upper 3/4 of the field.(strange, I thought the spores would run downhill and settle at the bottom)

Update! Went BACK out today.

Ended up hitting five horse fields(with permission) Came back with 3 pounds total with two people looking!!

Last night I did not trip hard, but my friend took another 30 grams wet, after the 17, and he said he was tripping for sure.
I Love pan subbs! Finding them is such a blast. They are up in FORCE all through north GA.
Tommorow.. OH tommorow :0

hey im in the north GA area :p just went out pickin in the forest, where do the subbs grow, and ill post some pics ! (when i mean location, i mean terrain and such)
you were right when you said the weather is good for subbs, the humidity has been 80% + for the last few days maybe week and a half, and warm as all hell. ive spotted mass clumps of small white-ish mushrooms along the lines of tree bases, collected like 20 diff species...very interesting

Congrats flowstone,
I happen to love pan subbs. I'm sure it had something to do with set/setting, but my pan subb trip was much much more enjoyable, life-changing, than my cube trips. With cubes, it comes on hard and in rushes that make me shudder. This alienates me from the effects. With pan subbs, it came on quickly but steadily and very comfortably. Here's my trip report if you're interested:
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat...rue#Post4176603
Best of luck with these wonderful mushrooms.
