TYVEK: wonder material or sefuctive trap?
    #4273659 - 06/08/05 09:05 PM (18 years, 9 months ago)

What do you think about tyvek filters? I like using just tyvek with bands, but I have been getting a high rate of contamination which I am thinking could possibly be from the postal envelopes i'm cutting up. I think tyvek gives unrivaled air exchange, and ease of use. No need to leave lids half off in the cooker etc. but it also seems a possible vector of contamination due to its nature. What do you guys think?

I think Poly Fill is the wonder material when it comes to jar filter tops. One hole, reuseable, and injectable. Almost non-existent contam rate when used on quart jars of WBS. Just throwing this out there as something for you to consider, it's not a report on Tyvek (never touched Tyvek myself)

Ok, i'm sure this might have been asked before, but where does one obtain some Polyfill?

this is a question i have been trying to get answered: what type of tyvek are the envelopes made of?
see there are two different types of soft tyvek, type 14 and type 16. 14 is not as fine as 16. 16 does not allow bacterial or fungal penetration through the material, but 14 can.
also, tyvek will only work as long as it is not saturated through by water. once this happens it is open season on contams.
another thing is which side is out? smooth side or fluffy side. in the construction industry and according to dupont's web site. the smooth side is the protective barrier side (preventing any penetration of water and contams), while the fluffy side allows for gas and moisture exchange.
so many variables for contams.
what tek are your jars, grains, wbs?
if it is one of those it has been recommended that you put the tyvek on the outside of the lid and then put on the ring. keeps the substrate from coming in direct contact with the tyvek so it doesn't retain moisture.

good luck
peace

True, nothing is better than free shit, except perhaps shit that actually works. Post office tyvek is mediocre at best, and downright crappy at worst. Synthetic filter disks are best, polyfil is perhaps second best, but be sure to keep it dry, and thick kite or garmet grade tyvek would be a distant third, while the post office tyvek is a very far fourth choice. I've used them all. You can't expect something no thicker than a piece of paper to perform a function as well as something manufactured for the purpose.

I have never had a contamination with grain and I have done well over 60 quart jars of grain now with the pf tek vermiculite for the top layer i got contams.  I used tyvek instead not one single contam either using brf half pints...free shit that accomplishes the goal with flying colors hahahahaha. :crazy2:

I have found the postal envolope tyvek to be the best. No contams at all on pfjars, and no need for a dry verm layer. It is very easy to cut and work with. Just put it between the band and the lid and pressure cook it with the jars. I dont know why you would be using a rubber band.

Oh, and if are making lots of lids, get one of these.

RK anwsered that already.

They make the ink side face outwards on houses..

Do it like so

Tyvek has done me well thus far, Cept I don't like how you have to put tape over the hole...Polyfil you just knock and go

Tyvek's just easier, perfect for the lazy-man

I use tyvek on rice cakes with the layer of vermiculite and I dont get any contams, my jars sit on top of a dusty water heater in a closet that never gets cleaned, if your tyvek is getting wet inside the pc it will contam, use less water or it will boil over the tops of the jars and put 2 or 3 layers of foil over them, also it helps to put the tyvek in the oven at 300 degrees for 5-10 mins before you use it , you never know where that stuff has been.

It's almost inevitable that every time I PC jars I have water on top of the tyvek undereath the foil. I just wipe it off. No contams yet. Post office tyvek has not failed me yet  For PF jars I just have the substrate, dry verm layer, tyvek, band. No lid. No problem.

I think I'm going to get plastic quart jar lids and use one larger hole for air exchange and one smaller hole for inoculation. If you can use tyvek, add a specified amount of grain and water in and PC, its so easy. No wait time for soaking or anything like that, this is the type of method I am trying to perfect. I didn't know that filter disks were a different material than tyvek, are they lots better?

I've done my share of jars by now and used tyvek on every one.

Never had a problem with it. Colonization times seem right on the money and contams rates are low. Very convenient to use now that I got my system for preparing grain down. Just my 0.02
