    #4273054 - 06/08/05 08:41 PM (11 years, 5 months ago)

Just started germinating half of my seeds in 1/4peat and regular potting soil. I know its a prairie shrub.. I assume keep the soil relitively dry

Make sure you keep close attention to them when they are in full sun, don't let them dry it (it isn't hard for them to dry). I wish i could spend more time with my seedlings, ALL of mine died yesterday because i was working on a chicken farm for a day.

I started some a few weeks ago. Didn't give them any special care other than keep the soil moist at all times.
I gave them a soak in boiling hot water before planting.

As of may 28th

Oh wow esin, that's really neat. I just now finished fixing my greenhouse (haven't used it since i traded for it on the shroomery, because it needed lots of work). I'm gonna boil some water right now, and start germinating more seeds. The greenhouse is very humid, hopefully that keeps the seedlings healthier. Currently i am germinating morning glories, leonotus leonorus, datura metel/stramonium, and phalaris grass.

On a sidenote, i'm actually starting to have a nice day. I woke up to knocking over an entertainment stand, then putting on my pants and cat poop rolling out the bottom of my pant-leg (my girlfriends cats). I was sooooo pissed, but now that i have a greenhouse, my plants are healthy, and this Autechre song (track 03 on Peel Sessions) is bad-fucking-ass.

Heh actually i had tried to grow them inside a minigreenhouse once and they all died before throwing their second set of leaves.

This time i planted them outside in the same pot as some peas and they seem to be doing much better.

They're in partial sun though. And i make sure the soil is always moist.

Cat poo? Yuck! Weird morning, i reckon
Bahh my day pretty much sucked, all i do these days is studying. Goddamn finals :mad2:

Hmm, i guess i'll just have to pay a lot more attention to the seedlings in the full sun. I've been using peat pellets, would it be better to use regular potting soil? I hear they like poor soil.

mmm peat is completely devoid of nutrients...
the only things u can grow in streight up peat are swamp and bog plants. i use it for my carnivores...
maybe a peat/soil mix would be best...

does any1 know what the natural habitat is for this plant?

Well, that's definitely good to know, lol. Guess i should just ditch all of my peat pellets and seeds i'm trying to germinate. I've read that bundle flower grows in prairies.

indoors mine all failed within the month under low flouro lighting (2 dayligh 18" 1 2' cool white).  i uped the light switched from a crappy retial potting soil to an outdoor mix i got from teh yard (sandy) and they did great.

i also had worse luck with leptolobus.  put them outside and they did fine till we got a snow :frown:

Well my desmanthus didn't look like sesame seed. They were like the pic of the desmanthus seed in shamanspalace's site.

I did get some MH seed last year that was very identical to DI seed (just lighter in color) and had exactly equal sprouts. I never managed to grow any into maturity though.

However, I just recently got some MH seed that is very different from the other mimosa seed i had. Much bigger and black in color. They came directly from Brazil along with some very good looking jurema, so i'm more inclined to trust these.
Their sprouts were *very* different from DI but i never got to see the second set of leaves because the doggy ate them :frown:

I planted more seed a couple days ago, hopefully my dog won't eat them this time

Yes I hear the larger seeds are the true mimosa. I got mine from shamanspalace so i was inclined to trust that these were legit.

Can you get anymore larger mimosa seeds? I woud love to trade for some.

desmanthus seeds are about 4mm flat almond shaped, smoothe shiny caramel colored surface...

sprouts look alot like passiflora sprouts to me with
almost perfectly round cotyldons... but then i imagine alot of sprouts
look like that...

Let me try to get a picture of my mimosa seeds up here. Can anyone recommend a good program for resizing?

It's hard to be sure from the pic.

Well i took pics of DI, and the two kinds of MH.

Sorry for the bad pics, aside from having shaky hands i haven't figured out how to use all my camera's functions yet. One i used flash and got too bright. The other i didn't and it got too dark and off-focus  Oh well, i guess they'll have to do...

The mimosa i got from Brazil is the black seed on the left. The mimosa seed i got last year (which had sprouts similar to DI) is the lighter seed on the center. The desmanthus is the reddish seed on the right.

I have more than i can use. Shoot me a PM if you're interested.

Ooops, apparently i was mistaken.
Whatever sprouted in there that my dog ate wasn't a MH. Probably some random seed that was already in the soil.

The new seeds i sown sprouted today and the plantlets are quite similar to DI.
The leaves are smaller and less rounded but very similar nonetheless.

Now my dog ate the Desmanthuses though :mad2:
I put my stetsonia in front of my new seedlings, that should turn him off
