Covered poo/mycelium mix with poo...is that right?
    #4271676 - 06/08/05 12:25 PM (18 years, 10 months ago)

My friend mixed poo and mycelium as in the poo teks, then covered it in a thin layer of straight poo...is that the right way to do it, or should she leave it uncovered (no poo on top) and let it colonize and then case? Or does she wait for the mycelium to grow up through the poo layer on top, and then case?

It was like this after mixing

and then covered with poo to look like this, then covered and put in incubator

Is that right?

The first picture is right. You don't want a unspawned layer of poo on top, just leave it as is and cover with casing material once colonized.

You rock diver, as always. How's this look?

So when the top is all overgrown with mycelium, case it with 1/2-1inch 50/50 (my mix being used), incubate until colonized on the casing layer and then fruit, correct?

Yep, that's more like how it should look. Case once fully colonized. I usually don't incubate past 1-2 days for the very reason that you want mycelium just below the surface. A day or two after that into fruiting conditions it'll poke up right on time. Don't let growth of the casing layer get too heavy, i.e. short incubation period.

I suppose this is a good place to ask...

I have heard you want just a little bit of myc poking through, too much and your yield will suffer, too little and your yield will suffer.

I was given an estimate of around 30% of the surface should be white, the rest should be the casing. Also it is important to make sure that the growth is even, like not concentrated around the edges, extra casing can be placed on top of the areas that seem to have a jump start. (called patching?)

Any pics of how the casing surface should look before taking it out of the incubator and placing it into the fruiting chamber?

Me thinks this will help both of us.
