Specific question to the experts here
    #4271617 - 06/08/05 02:09 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

Are there any mushrooms that grow in Florida that could be confused with Psilocybe Cubensis.

I mean, in the fields of cows, where there are pies and psilocybe cubensis, are there any mushrooms that look similar to them, and are poisonous?

I've been looking all over this morning for any information on poisonous fungi in florida, and nothing looks even close to psilocybe cubensis.

I'm talking about a poisonous mushroom that has the same cap coloration, same size, stem size, height, habitat, etc.

Yes, Stropharia semiglobata, (Hemispherical Stropharia)... VERY closely resembles a cubensis, and grows in the same habitat. Not poisonous, though. Edible.

yes there are Agaricus and Stropharia mushrooms which grow on dung and also very closely resemble Psilocybe cubensis.

Psilocybe semiglobata also tends to mimic P. cubensis.
It is common in northern florida, lesser common in southern florida.

And those are all very poisonous?

The semiglobata/stopharia look similar to it, any more?

Oh, and what are symptoms of mushroom intoxication?

i'm asking because my friend ate mushrooms the other day, and he's like 99% sure he ate cubes, and everyone he ate it with feels fine(he consumed sunday night), and he's been having weird stomach issues the last few days.

No vomiting or diarrhea, but he has been shitting more than normal, and feeling nausea sometimes, and has a loss of appetite. But he was also possibly starting to come down with an ulcer, known this for like 2 weeks now, and the symptoms more closely match symptoms of an ulcer, since it's been there for a while now.

I'm fairly certain he hasn't eaten any poisonous mushroom, since he hasn't vomited or had diarrhea, and no sharp pains in his abdomen, only a weird overall feeling coming from his stomach(the kind from an ulcer), and being the worrywart that I am, I wanted to check with you guys.

It's been 72 hours since ingestion, no vomiting, no diarrhea, no sharp cramping or pains. I think he is just having the early signs of an ulcer, and he asked his mom( a psychatrist, and his dad is a kidney doctor[forgot the name for it]) and they think it might be an ulcer too.

No harm can come from questioning. "Best" case scenerio: You prove it right without relying on the fact that it is widely accepted. Argument strengthened. "Worst" case scenerio: You realize you might have been wrong. The new answer might or might not be what you want to hear, but it beats defending yourself with bullshit.

He pretty much did know what is was, he got shrooms from the same field ID'd on here as cubes.

I think he thinks maybe 1 or 2 msuhrooms out of the many he picked got confused/taken as cubes, and he might've eaten a lone bad one.

My guess is that he did indeed ingest p. cubensis. Psilocybin can cause a variety of reactions and symptoms can persist for a long time in rare cases. (Like my experience last fall.)Tell your friend to chill out and smarten up and only ingest what he is sure about.

If he indeed ate and reacted to ch. molybdites, he should be worse off than he is.

Just my view.

Wallace

Per my previous reply, the Stropharia semiglobata VERY closely resembles a cube. It's NOT poisonous, does not bruise blue, but has all the other characteristics of a cube minus the psilocybin. Stropharia species have no deadly poisonous strains, but some strains may cause gastro-intestinal discomfort or allergic reactions at the most.
