50/50 mix of verm/sphagnum peat moss at field capacity wetness, put in gladware container, nuked 5 minutes, stirred, nuked 5 minutes
about 4 minutes into the second 5, I noticed a smell, looked in, and the 50/50 mix was on FIRE and the gladware was melting! WTF?
the 50/50 mix is dry and coarse as charcoal now...wtf?
how do you sterilize in a microwave...isn't this what all the teks say to do to sterilize the mixture?

i dont personally bother sterilizing casing mix and never have any problems, but if u must do so, then pressure cook or boil inside of GLASS jars

Verm gets to extremely high temperatures in the microwave, I don't think any store bought microwaveable container will hold up to it. Many substances can get to 100's of degrees in a microwave, some to 1000's.

some will hold up. there are some that are labeled "microwave safe" that are really only good for microwave "reheating" (ie: very short times). the ones you want are "heat resistant" and as was mentioned, usually thicker.

Possibly, I am not sure how hot verm gets but certain substances get extremely hot, I have touched verm glass jars in a microwave that seemed hotter than pyrex from a 200C oven. Check out these links http://www.google.ie/search?hl=en&q=%2Bmicrowave+%2Bfurnace+%2Bmetal&meta=

I have been using this microwaveable dish for over 3 years. I only use it for making 60/40 Verm and Coco Coir casings.
It hasn't let me down yet.

Maybe I am wrong so. If your verm is kept moist there shouldnt be a problem, it is when it dries out and there is no water for the microwave to absorb that it will get hot, you probably never let it go dry. I have microwaved activated charcoal to clean off the volatiles and it has glowed red hot, and has broken a pyrex dish. The heat travelled through the pyrex, through the bottom of the microwave and glued the microwave to the top of my freezer that it was sitting on. The top of the freezer was black and warped, now that is hot!
