Calcium hydroxide to peat ratio................
    #4270561 - 06/08/05 04:18 AM (12 years, 2 months ago)

Finally got my hands on some pure calcium hydroxide. The pH meter I got now sucks, but, I'm about to get a Kelway soil pH meter / moisture tester.

But, until then, is there any ratios to go by......like......4 cups peat and 1 tablespoon calcium hydroxide.?

P.S. :: How do you check soil pH with paper test strips? I got some of those put up somewhere

All you do with the test strip is place is between your soil, and remove it in 20 seconds. if your soil is 90% hydrated, this works... I don't know about dry soil.

I'd just stick to the test strips IMO. Although, that tester is a good one. Mr. Stamets uses that one if i'm not mistaken. Strips are just cheap and dead on. Here's a mixture for peat that Jim posted. Check out the last post in this thread

Quote:

Adding 4% agricultural hydrated lime and 15% crushed oyster shell, by
volume, to the over all 50/50 mix is a much better casing mix.

Quote:

- 15 1/2 cups vermiculite
- 15 1/2 cups peat moss
- 4 1/2 cups crushed oyster shell
- 1.2 cups of hydrated lime
- 15 cups of distilled water (1 cup short of a gallon of bottled water)

(taken from hotnutz link.)

Does this look ok? 4% by volume seems like alot, but I've only messed with hydrated lime once.

Yeh, I've always heard 5% by volume

I'm not sure what you are talking about but i use Calcium CARBONATE as a Ph buffer...not hydroxide
