Student overdoses on magic mushrooms 28.05.2005
A Tamatea High School student was taken away in an ambulance yesterday afternoon after overdosing on magic mushrooms at school.
Eighteen year-old Tahi Thomas said the whole school watched the drama unfold at about 2pm yesterday.
"Some guy overdosed on mushies - a student at Tamatea High.
Another student told me, they watched him overdose on it.
They actually saw him collapse."
Mr Thomas, who had a younger brother at the school, followed an ambulance there from the Pak 'n' Save carpark.
He thought one of his friends might have been injured in a fight, but when he arrived he saw three police cars and an ambulance on the basketball courts, "picking up a guy".

There is something bizarre about this story. I remember seeing it when it was published, but there has been no subsequent stories about it. Personally, I don't buy it.
"Another student told me, they watched him overdose on it. They actually saw him collapse." seems to imply someone witnessed him eating mushrooms and then collapse. I'm no expert, but I don't know of any "magic", edible, or toxic mushroom that would cause a reaction like this. What do you think?

Yeah, as always with such stories, skepticism is a good attitude.

I'm from NZ and that story doesn't surprise me at all. Firstly the medias haste to claim that they were magic mushrooms, without any confirmation at all except a 2nd had report from a random person, is typical of NZ newspapers (probably all newspapers actually).
Theres a couple of possible situations - either the guy did take actual shrooms, and was tripping out way too hard, freaking out at school (jeez, what a stupid idea). Or else he took the wrong shrooms and began to get poisoned by them. Then again he may not have eaten any shrooms at all and that was just a rumor.
Here in NZ (again, probably in a lot of places, but it seems to happen a lot here) loads of people mis-identify shrooms. Its just like in the hunting forum here at the shroomery where most ID questions are wrong, whereas a lot of people I've come across in NZ will go ahead and eat a shroom if there is even but the slightest possibility that they're magic. I've seen people projectile vomiting, feverish, diahorrea, etc. from eating un-identified shrooms. Theres even been a couple of times where someones asked me if a shroom they've got in their pocket is magic, I've said no, and they've not beleived me because they were so hopeful it would be a magic shroom and gone ahead and eaten them anyway.
Its kind of sad really to think that one day someone could die from not IDing their shrooms correctly. I'd be interested to hear a follow up on this story, I might make a phone call to that newspaper and ask them.

You forgot, perhaps he didn't eat any mushrooms and the paper simply reprinted the rumors they heard.

Actually I didn't

A quite likely scenario if you think about it and look at the way that article was written. Bah, fucking shitty newspapers.

I've eaten so many shrooms that I couldn't stand up even if I wanted to. I don't find the 10g+ dosages to be any fun at all, but they are nowhere near deadly (from a toxicity standpoint).
>Actually I didn't >Then again he may not have eaten any shrooms at all and that was just a rumor.
Ah... I stand corrected.

Surely there is a difference between overdosing and collapsing. What kind of news story is that anyway, it actually says 'some guy'. Blown way out of proportion by the sounds of it.

i've been so shroomy, i thought a was walking, and i was actually lying face down in the grass drooling, walking in place and mumbling gibberish to myself. it was awsesome. if i knew i could be safe i would do it again and try to take a few people with me. definately not for kids at school tho!

<<i thought a was walking, and i was actually lying face down in the grass drooling>>
I had a similar experience on a high dose years ago. It was night time and I looked up at the moon (I was standing up) and I just fell flat backwards and hit the concrete without even realizing I had fallen. I thought I was still standing up! It's a real unique feeling. I'm lucky I didn't get a concussion.

yeah tho a student appearing to collapse makes perfect sense. this occurred because he ate too many shrooms. thi couldbe conidered "overdose" though there clearly is a distinction between OD and LD or "lethal dose"
i think heriously, when people take more drug than they can manage, or more than they intended, its an overdose.
i think people should start uing the term "lethal dose' for actual deaths, or even potential deaths as in cases of near death or extreme risk thereof.
instead of saying, "did you hear that toby OD'd on heroin?" they could say "LD'd.
then if somedbody suggested an OD on shrooms, people could chuckle about it.

frankly, if someone dies from being stupid like non properly identifying a mushroom, or eating a mushroom regardless of advice, well, thats one less stupid person ruining the mushroom scene, one less stupid person creating headlines. brutal honesty. these types of people are often the ones not fit for the experience to begin with.
edit: after re-reading this post, I think I came off a little harsh. forgive me, I don't think anyone should die. I guess getting really sick is what they deserve.

That's what we should do, start spinning OD's to LD's to distinguish the two, and show that there is a clear difference.
Kind of reminds me of the term "homicide bombing" that Fox News uses in place of "suicide bombing"
From here on out, all OD's that result in death will be referred to as "LD's" as opposed to OD's, spread the word!!!

The "incident" is actually 15 days old now. I looked on the two school newsletters since this supposedly occured and this is no mention of it. So, I have my doubts about this one.
Anno, keep us posted if you hear back.

after overdosing on magic mushrooms
That would be, what, about 50 kilograms or so? Alright...

Depends on your body weight... not so much for a toddler, but in the case of an adult, it is a lot.

I sent inquiring emails to the newspaper, the school and the hospital, so far I received one answer, from the newspaper:
