The Only Thing That Matters
    #4270250 - 06/08/05 01:49 AM (11 years, 7 months ago)

It is not what goods or knowledge you have accumulated; not what psychedelic insights you have been shown; it is the people that you have touched and the relationships you have forged. All else pales in comparison.

Swami out.

And interacting with people and forming meaningful relationships is most of life.

Makes it easier to enjoy yourself.

Hall & Oates:

You?re a rich girl, and you?ve gone too far

?cause you know it don?t matter anyway

You can rely on the old man?s money

You can rely on the old man?s money

I t?s a bitch girl but it?s gone too far

?cause you know it don?t matter anyway

Say money but it won?t get you too far,

Get you too far

And don?t you know, don?t you know

That it?s wrong to take what is given you

So far gone, on your own

You can get along if you try to be strong

But you?ll never be strong

?cause

You?re a rich girl, and you?ve gone too far

?cause you know it don?t matter anyway

You can rely on the old man?s money

You can rely on the old man?s money

It?s a bitch girl and it?s gone too far

?cause you know it don?t matter anyway

Say money but it won?t get you too far,

Get you too far

High and dry, out of the rain

It?s so easy to hurt others when you can?t feel pain

And don?t you know that a love can?t grow

?cause there?s too much to give, ?cause you?d rather live

For the thrill of it all, oh

It's nice to have, but it's not the sum-all and be-all of all things. As you grow older, you begin to realise what's really important in life. Just wait and see.....

I would also say that relationships with other people are not the sum of all things, but they can certainly be nice to have. Most old people i know are extremely concerned with money, though. Such a shame, eh?

Indeed. And it's even more of a shame that some are so shallow as to base their happiness on material things alone....

Perhaps, yes, i certainly don't find them satisfying, i and i think most people who use material possessions to fill the infinite hollow (which IMO can only be filled by infinity itself) probably don't gain too much happiness in them either, if they were to be truly honest with themselves (although its good for them if they do find happiness in such things). I think most people have just been conditioned by advertising etc to have such a thirst for material possessions... and as its the only 'answer' they know of, its not entierly their fault. Oh well, we'll evolve soon enough.

True, I enjoy my possessions, even if they aren't the best or the fastest or whatever. I'm content and grateful for what I have though, and I think some need to learn to be content and grateful for what they have as well, instead of being unhappy with what they don't have, as I've found many do.
But more importantly, I'm also blessed with a loving and caring foster family, which far outweighs any material thing I have. Of course, I certainly don't have all the answers nor do I claim to, but it works for me though. I suppose true happiness is something each person must search within themselves for.....

Yes, i agree.
A neurotic young man once asked a Zen Master how he could find peace of mind.
"How can you lack anything" the Roshi asked "When you already have the greatest treasure in the universe?"
"How do I own the greatest treasure in the universe?" the young man asked, baffled
"The place where that question comes from is the greatest treasure in the universe" said the master, being more explicit than usual.

(Although it would be fun to have flaming eyes, like the baby in your pic )

I don't agree. Some of my psychedelic experiences are my most tresured possessions. I felt at home in infinity, fearless and in contact with my essense which was pure Love.

Relationships with others are wonderful at times and very important. Yet I find them secondary to my relationship to myself. I am involved with the most wonderful woman I have ever found on this earth, and I still feel the above statements are true.  :sun: :mushroom2:

I have to agree with Icelander as well. Relationships with people are great and all but the one thing that remains constant is you and your mind. Maintaining a good relationship with my"self" is more important than creating/touching/maintaining relationships with others. People (both family and friends) always seem to let me down, but I rarely do that to myself. And like Icelander, some of the happiest times of my life so far have been during psychedelic experiences

my relationship to myself

Whatever that means. Only a divided mind (unwhole/unholy) can relate to itself. A relationship is a connection between two disparate objects.

"relationships you have forged"

Like a blacksmith, I heat the relationship in a fire until it is red hot. Then, I pound that relationship with a hammer until it is the type of relationship that I desire. If the relationship breaks from the pounding on the anvil, or from the thermal shock of being shoved into the cold water, I find another relationship to forge.
