Cakes aren't showing signs of life, scrap them or wait?
    #4268461 - 06/07/05 04:53 PM (11 years, 5 months ago)

I recently inoculated 24 brown rice flour/verm. cakes. 11 were mexi-cubs, 12 were ecuadorians, and 1 was a cambodian, all with 1cc of spore solution (except the cam which got 2. They were all inoculated between 5/30 and 5/31. (around 8 days ago) I put them in a tupperware box with a seed germination mat underneath some towels. The temp was usually in the 80's, except one night I accidentally let it get up to 92. None of the jars show any signs of life, except the cambodian jar, which seems to be doing nicely. Is it just going faster because of the extra spores, or did I kill my other 23 jars by overcooking them? I would like to get some shrooms as soon as possible, so how long should I wait before I scrap them and try again? Thanks for the help.

Did you do the jars with one hole or several?

Four (almost) evenly spaced holes.

Try to keep the temp between 84 and 86. What ratios did you use verm/brf/water?

No I didn't cook them after they were injected (I know that much atleast), I used apprx. 1/2 cup verm to 1/4 cup BRF and 1/4 cup Water. For the first 12 jars, I used water that I got from steeping finch seed for a while (maybe I made a mistake here?), as I read somewhere that it's rich in nutrients. There is also a little birdseed that I accidentally spilled in the mix when I was adding the water.

And I meant cooking them in my psuedo-incubator with the seed germination pad.......as I can see how that is confusing.

hello contams. did you soak that seed for 12-24 hours before hand? did you pressure cook it for 1+ hour at 15psi? if not, then your jars sound doomed

I soaked the seeds for about 6 hours and autoclaved the jars. It's fine if I loose some to contams. I'm going for overkill, which is why I have 24 and not 5 or 6, just because I'm still new to this and expect to loose quite a few. I just inspected them again, and 7 of the 11 mexi-cubies are showing a little myc. growth. One looks to be contaminated though. I can't see anything happening in the EC's though.
