ID help request.
    #4268185 - 06/07/05 04:04 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

Hiya all. Just wanted to see if anyone could help me ID these little guys.

a. Growing in central Georgia, directly from cow dung.
b. Gills are attached but pull off easily and cleanly. Gills appear to have been brown but it's difficult to say for sure because of drying/rotting (see pic.) There is a veil remnant ring around the stems.
c. Caps average 8.5 cm wide and stems average 10 cm long.
d. Stem is white, tough, and thick. When I pulled it open and scraped my finger along the inside, it bruised almost instantly to black or maybe a very dark shade of blue. It doesn't really look like the bruising in psilocybe images that I've seen (not quite that blue.) You can see a small amount of bruising where I cut the stem near the cap in one of the photos.
e. The caps are easily seen in the images.
f. The smell is that of a typical mushroom.
g. The spore print is black, and the stems and veil rings are peppered with black spores as well.

are you sure the sporeprint is black?

Those look like cubensis to me which have a purple/chocolate color spore print.

Nice finds

Well, I think I may be a little colorblind. The prints look black to me, but two family members agree that they look purplish. Same with the spores on the stem. The bruising has intensified since the last look I took, also. Maybe they ARE cubes - I'll keep an eye on the pasture and see if I can find some fresher ones to look at.

By the way, thanks a ton for the quick help guys.

No harm can come from questioning. "Best" case scenerio: You prove it right without relying on the fact that it is widely accepted. Argument strengthened. "Worst" case scenerio: You realize you might have been wrong. The new answer might or might not be what you want to hear, but it beats defending yourself with bullshit.
