H/Poo weight to volume ratio....
    #4266283 - 06/07/05 02:09 AM (11 years, 5 months ago)

Ok, hope this is a quick question... tried to search for it but it was hard to clarify what exactly I was trying to ask.

Alrighty, I have 12 BRF jars colonizing, doing nicely, about 70%-80% done.

I also have 15 pounds of horse poo waiting for me.

I know of the 4:1 ratio of Poo to Substrate... but I was curious if anyone can give an estimate on how many pints worth of poo 15lbs would be.

I understand water can totally throw off any guess, but lets just say its on the fairly dry side.

I also know I can scoop up all the poo and measure it however I'm not exactly excited to even look at the shit, let alone put it in my kitchen measuring cups.

Let me know if you have any idea what I'm talking about, or if I'm just a baby and should go out and do it myself.

Well

2 pints = 1 quart

I would recommend using 2 quarts for 5 lbs (to be on the safe side) of hydrated horse poo. That amount fits nicely in a 12 quart dishpan container.

So for your 15 lbs go with all 12 pint containers. (although it may be better if you don't do them all at once in the same container)

Make sure to grind up the BRF in a cheese grater or food processor before spawning for best results.

Good luck, hope that helps.

I agree..3 12 quart dishpans from walmart, 99 cents each...line with tin foil and put in 5 lbs of poo in each, and mix in 3 pints into each of the three tubs. Then leave 1 pint per tub (three) to cover the top of each tub with a thin layer of spawn.

Thats helps me out a bit... I like that idea of making 3 seperate casings just incase one decided to contam.

I was also plannign on making a single tub fruiting chamber with the polyfill holes cut in the sides. These where made popular by IamtheWalrus and Agnostic, I think that idea is great.

Another question. How many jars of spawn, and how many pounds of h/poo would i need to make 2 square feet of 4 inch substrate? I wanted to start out pretty big (first time grow but up for the challenge) and I wanted a large tub that I can put my casings in.

Any of you have pictures of those dishpans you were all talking about, the ones that I need three of? Is that one I see in that last post?

For the grow that psilocyben used for his  :::poo poo:::(<--clicky clicky) he used a 17X15X11 with 5lbs of poo.  Which is much bigger than the 12qt. dishpan

I bought this same container because I am doing a similar grow.

I also have a couple of the 12qt. dishpans from walmart.

I am trying to decide which to use.  His substrate only came out to 2+inch, where as the substrate would be much closer to 4 inches using the dishpan, which is supposedly more desireable.

However, look at the massive flushes he has in those pictures.

I doubt I'd be able to produce that many shrooms in the dishpan simply, because there is a lot more surface area with the larger container.

but you will probably have larger fruits...

4" of substrate is always better than 2"...in my book.

So 2 quarts per 5lbs ya say?

I read (and thought) that putting a thin layer of spawn on the top would be a great way to make it more contam. "resistant".. Scat.

I still love that flush with the egg-box , Ownage

That is an impressive post.

I noticed you mentioned linning the tub with foil, is there a reason for this? Roadkill had mentioned in one of his teks that foil can rust and that would be bad, is something wrong with just leaving it in the plastic tub? Perhaps place a bag lining the bottom...

I believe the foil is to prevent side pinning. No light can enter the tub from the sides when you have foil. Even though they are solid white, some light enters through the tub.

fairly dry may not be (probably isn't) good enough.
make sure it doesn't smell of ammonia. aged poo is safer to use.

I think I was a bit unclear with that. This shit is definitely old enough, no piss smell. But since I got it from outside rain has got it wet abit, so its not wet because its fresh, its because it just was rained on and it hasn't fully dried of that.

This shit is white, more then most of the pics I've seen around here. I talked a bit more in depth about it in my post "Bright White Horse Poo"... so yea its old. Thanks for the concern tho
