Uninstall bittorrent client and get this. http://pingpong-abc.sourceforge.net/

Use torrentspy.com to find torrents.

When looking for torrents the number of "seeders" means people still connected sharing a full copy. "downloaders" is how many people with uncomplete copies downloading (and hopfully sharing what they have).

The more seeders and a higher ratio of seeders to downloaders will give you the best speeds.

You'll get a 100 answers from 100 people, but I'd suggest you get a copy of Azureus:

http://azureus.sourceforge.net/

And go from there.

Some features:

Multiple torrent downloads
Upload and download speed limiting, both globally and per torrent
Advanced seeding rules
Adjustable disk cache
Only uses one port for all the torrents
UPnP sets the forward on your router automatically

Good luck!

4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.

abc & g3 torrent are my favorite.

azureus is kind of a headache & real slow, although azureus is probably the most feature-packed client out there.

jes. forward ports 6881-6889 (IIRC) to your comp's IP.

really, all this shizz is explained via practically any BT FAQ on the net.

the only other possibility i can conceive of is that you might be behind something like an educational or work firewall that has those ports blocked. in that case, tuff titty.

I know everyone has a different suggestion, but  if you want simplicity with good control (of up/down speeds, etc) use BitTornado (formerly SHadow experimental)

http://www.bittornado.com/

If you've ever used Getright, you'll find yourself right at home.
