Top layer of Verm needed?
    #426415 - 10/15/01 02:34 PM (23 years, 4 months ago)

Is the top layer of verm to fill the airspace between the BRF/verm and the lid really needed? I forgot it and the jars are already sterilized! Do I need to add it and sterilize again? I did clean the glass in the void before I put them in the PC.

according to pf and consensus, the verm layer is used as a barrier to contams. the problem with not having the verm layer is you have no barrier between air (dirty) and uncolonized substrate. you always need some barrier to contams when you are colonizing- pf jars, grains, anything.

it's very easy, just open, add the vermiculite, close, re-sterilize. how hard is that. if there is no barrir of any kind then it will contam for sure. no way of avoiding it.
