My sub has become zombified

I took a cake of whole brown rice out that had stopped producing. it had lost all its color and had become transclucent like a corpse. I had imagined that when a substrate nutes are consumed, nothing is left. I thought rice was a pretty homogenous substance, so wouldnt all of it get consumed?

never all of a substrate is getting used up,
unless you get a sclerotia forming strain such as mex a.

mex a is capable of transforming VERY large ammounts of the substrate
into its hyphae, namely the sclerotia, whereas cubensis usually
just take whatever nutes tehy want from the sub and produce their fruitbodies.

you will NEVER have them "consume" the grains as does mex a for example,
no matter of what the substrate is.

Just like people dont process all the parts of the food that we are given...we still shit out the parts we cant use.

Growing with bags, start to finish (including my new grain and substrate prep)
Anyone looking to start bulk tubs/mono tubs/shotgun hybrids? Good tubs to use..
How I do grain (old still good tips)
Turn your closet into a fruiting chamber
