ok i'll tell you, it's nothing special indeed:
keeps small agar test jars at a 45? angle while they cool, so when the agar is hard you have more inoculating area

i took the idea from here: http://www.fao.org//DOCREP/004/AB497E/ab497e07.htm#bm7.4 they use small bottles. these small jars are a halfway between culture slants and petri. i'm also doing petri, but i find this method easier (you can sterilize the jars with agar in, and you don't have to pour it after sterilization, risking a contamination

That may be, my point is the mycelium grows on top of the agar...you only need enough to just barley cover the surface of the bottom, and anything underneath isnt being used.
However, 10ml is a small amount for a plate, so not much is being wasted overall...still enough to do like twice as many jars probably if you put a thin layer on the bottom. But whats a few pennies to make things easier on you, if that does so...
