ID Request from SW Maryland
    #4261483 - 06/05/05 10:48 PM (12 years, 20 days ago)

Hi, I'm new here and this is my first post, although I've been reading the forums for a little while.

I picked these today, Sunday, from my yard--regular green grass, about 2 weeks uncut. It rained for several days last week, most recently on Friday. I'm in Maryland, about 30 miles north of DC. These were not the largest specimens I found, but they are the best preserved. I'm more asking to see if these are active and good to search for right when they spring up next time it rains (if it rains).

Anyway, they are a dull brown color, with a more cinnamon-like brown towards the center "nipple" area. Some have rings of different shaded-browns, as in the last picture. The gills go in a sort of long/short pattern, with some going all the way to the stem and the others going only about half-way. Here are some pictures. I'm in the process of making a spore print so when it's done I'll report on that. Thanks if anyone can help me out.

Sorry the second one is out of focus, but the one at the bottom best illustrates the "rings".

Did you get a spore print? I'm not expert, but they look like they could either be subbs. or something entirely different.

So yeah I guess I have no idea really.

At first glance those look like Conocybes. If so, a spore print should come out brown.

Happy mushrooming!

Alright my first attempt at a spore print didn't work, I'll try it again. The mushrooms being a few days old wouldn't affect how easily a print could be made, would it?

Yes, it would. They dry out, among other things. You might try putting a glass or bowl over the caps and sprinkling a little water on them to help get the humidity up.

Happy mushrooming!

Alright, the spore print was pretty much brown, but not the bright brown color of the conocybe sporeprint in the "dangerous look-alikes" section of the Hunting FAQ. I've been told that black spore prints look jet black, so if it isn't really dark it's probably brown. So is it safe to say that this isn't active?

Hey I'd just like to make sure that the above sporeprint classifies as brown and that these are inactive. A whole bunch sprung up after a rain storm the other day so I wouldn't want them to go to waste if they're good.

Thanks.
