Cult poly bags for straw, sawdust, etc.
    #4259971 - 06/05/05 01:20 PM (18 years, 9 months ago)

For those that have used poly tubing/bags for holding pasteurized substrate spawned with grain--would these work?

http://www.bcuplastics.com/sku-032/web/store/catalog.item.cfm?Category_ID=384
Or is that poly to thin (1 mil)?
Gusseted bags would just turn into a rough circle when packed with a substate...so I'm thinking around 6 x 4 x 20 inches would be a decent size (trying to use these for oysters...maybe reishi, though I'm not sure about that yet).
Would this be a viable option for containing the substrate?
Thanks.

Far as i understand. Ploy works

I've use ziplock bags for pasturization...

I probably would try them with anything else IMO.

1 mil is too thin, straw would poke holes and rip that stuff up. Freezer ziplocks are thicker than 1 mil, they are probably around 2.5-3 mil.

I agree. Much too thin. I'd go get some Turkey roasting bags at the grocery store if I were you. Very strong and non-pores.

Hmmm.  Thanks.  I think RogerRabbit mentioned foodsaver bag rolls from sears...may just do that.  God knows one roll will last me 'til I die.

Foodsaver bags work good, they are tough and won't rip when packed with straw. I cable tie (50 or 75lb strength) off the ends.

If you can afford it. Get a roll of autoclav bags from Wally World. You can cut your own lengths of it. There about $15 for a roll.
