hey that's interesting Gomp I never thought of that relationship before.....
and of course we all know that mushrooms grow off dead plant matter so there seems to be a number of ways mushrooms are related to death.

All life relies on the death of other life to live. This isn't unique to mushrooms.

1) You can't get married to your spouse who is the same sex as you.
2) You can't have an abortion no matter how much you don't want a child.
3) You can't have a certain plant in your possession or you'll get locked up with a rapist and a murderer.

4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.

Indeed, all multicellular organisms require the death of many of its own cells just to continue living.

Mushrooms are no more related to death than humans are by eating plants and animals (and mushrooms).

What about autotrophs that grow from sunlight and soil?

is not every particle of light that streams down to earth a sign of the death clock of the sun? is not the soil comprised of decaying matter?

If you consider the sun to be living. And as for the soil, philosophically you could argue where you draw the mark between when you're feeding on the organism and when it's completely decayed back into nature and the soil it indirectly took all of its nutrients from to begin with.

I agree though, if you follow everything back far enough it really does end up being a cycle where we all are existing on organisms who have died before.

Except for the first organisms.  :syringe:

What about autotrophs that grow from sunlight and soil?

Autotrophs are citters that make their own organic molecules by taking the carbon from the air in the form of carbon dioxide; this is why they don't directly need something to die in order to grow.

However, even autotrophs need nitrogen which they get from ammonia or nitrates in the soil. That nitrogen ultimately comes from the death of some other life, so even autotrophs (indirectly) rely on death to live.

* The one exception I'm aware of are the chemosynthetic bacteria that live deep in the ocean by hydrothermal vents where tectonic plates are spreading apart. The sea water near hydrothermal vents is full of hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide, and oxygen and the chemosynthetic bacteria there can live and synthesize the organic molecules necessary for life from from the available chemicals. These bacteria form the base of the food chain there.

BTW: the only other reasonably likely place in the solar system besides Earth where life may currently exist is on the Galilean moon Europa which is believed to be a geothermally active core covered by a deep liquid salt-water ocean with a frozen surface.

Remembering that I am dying is what reminds me to LIVE!

Procrastination becomes more and more unthinkable to me as I grasp the temporary nature of this embodiment I have chosen.

Perfectionism seems ridiculous when I fully recognize that this may be AS GOOD AS IT GETS.

Love, learning, enjoyment, growth...these constitute the life I choose. Everything else is distraction.
