Idea for a business

I was driving through a yuppy/artsy part of a major city a while ago. There were coffee shops and art galleries everywhere. All of the art galleries were selling stuff for hundreds and even thousands of dollars. I then had an idea.

What if I were to open an "art thrift store?" I would buy art off of amateurs. I would buy whatever I could find that was good (paintings, sculptures, sketches) and that people would like to have. Since I would be buying off of amateurs who are doing it for the love of the hobby, I wouldn't be paying them much to buy their stuff. In fact, the city I live in has a lot of art students at the universities...so finding people to make some and sell me some art wouldn't be terribly difficult.

I would not charge much money at all. Maybe 50-100$ for most stuff. And, it would all be good stuff (not crap from some non-talented high school student or something).

So, not only could some art enthusiasts make some pocket change and get their work out in the world, but normal people could afford some decent art. And, I could make some money off of it.

Does this sound like a cool idea? Does it sound feasible or would I go belly-up? Any art or art gallery people here to give their opinions?

I think it's a good idea. Of course, your success will depend on where your business is located. There's a place in Nashville that does just that, and they've been in business ever since I can remember.....
