Its Raining Planets!
    #4255050 - 06/04/05 03:16 AM (18 years, 10 months ago)

Today scientists have discovered a total of 157 exo-planets (meaning planets in other solar systems). The number of discoveries of new planets are increasing incredibly. Scientists expect that by this summer the count will have reached 170.

They estimate that there are 10 to 100 billion planets sill waiting to be discovered in our galaxy.

What does this inspire you?

Wouldn't it be awesome to find new psychedelic substances on another planet?  :mushroom2:

The planets the are finding now are HUGE and orbiting close to their sun. We will have to build a bigger space telescope to resolve small rocky planets like our Earth.

If we are lucky, we might find another earth-like planet in our lifetime.

I seriously doubt we will be able to send a man to Mars in our lifetime.

Spaceships are gonna need some serious upgrades to venture to any earth-like planet that is discovered.

...and I don't wanna open a can of wormholes here, either.

Unfortunately, unlike star trek, we would never be able to have physical contact with another ecosystem.

Think about what happened to humans when civilizations divided by a few thousand years and a few thousand miles came into contact.  Now imagine that civilizations are divided my millions of years and different planets altogether.  Basically a 0% chance we could land on a planet with life, smell the air and touch (let alone eat) stuff without catastrophic consequences to those involved.  All contact would have to be made within environmentally sealed chambers forever.

The Drake Equation is intended to provide a way to estimate the number of extraterrestrial civilizations in the galaxy that currently have the ability to engage in interstellar communication. Here's the equation:

N = R(*) x F(p) x N(e) x F(l) x F(i) x F(c) x L

Translated, it means:

N ? Present number of extraterrestrial races capable of interstellar communication

R(*) ? Mean rate of star formation, average over the lifetime of the galaxy

F(p) ? Fraction of the stars that have planets

N(e) ? Average number of planets in a planetary system suitable for life

F(l) ? Fraction of suitable planets on which life actually develops

F(i) ? Fraction of life-bearing planets on which intelligent life develops

F(c) ? Fraction of intelligent life-bearing planets on which the capacity for interstellar communication develops

L ? Average lifetime of a technological civilization

The problem with equations like that is, there are no way to know the numerical value of any of the letters in the equation.

We have to guess the value of them, so basically, even with this equation, you can get a wide range of answers.
