Mushroom embalmment

I was wondering if its possible to preserve mushrooms in their ?living form? for exhibition purposes only (not consumption). I mean having them in something like a jar of formalin or using an ?embalmment? technique. Has anybody tried something similar or read something about it

Or go for a formaldehyde solution that is used to conserve biological samples worldwide. I think a google on the techniques of formaldehyde embalming would reveal alot!!! On the other hand one has to experiment since i never saw fungal lifeforms embalmed...
By the way thats a very cool idea!

I remember seeing somewhere, sometime, mushrooms that were dipped in some kind of polymer or resin for preservation. [Edit: Actually, I don't think they were dipped. I think the resin was either allowed to soak in or forced into the microscopic cavities under pressure.]
Don't fuck with formaldehyde--your fungus will be mushy and carcinogenic.

Ermmm...If he uses formaldehyde his specimen will be SEALED in a JAR for DISPLAY PURPOSES ONLY...That means he want handle it he will just look at it.
Another idea would be freeze drying ,where it goes crist dry but retains its shape and morphology.Freezdrying thoough is out of the question for layman, plus it could constitute "preperation for consumption" under the eyes of the law

Agar:
How long can something pickled preserve? More than a few months?
Is pickling good for exhibition or it changes the way the product looks like?
Psilo: Thanks for the hint. The idea of freezing crossed my mind . Its not very practical for exhibition but it works. (At least the mushrooms is preserved) Has anybody heard anything else?

It wouldn't really be "in living form" anymore anyway. It would look like a slimy, soggy mass. Probably along the lines of what would happen if you pickled them. Pickled mushrooms look like what you'd expect a mushroom to look like if you put it in water for a few weeks.
The formalin solution also discolors over time so you can barely see what is inside. Then you have to change that shit, exposing your DNA to some more cross-linkage with your cellular proteins.
I was just thinking if you make a really dilute solution of resin, the mushroom will soak it up like a sponge. Then after a few dips in that you can make a slightly thicker solution and dip it once more for a good outer coat. But now that I think about it, you'd probably have to freeze dry them first.
I just found these freeze dried mushrooms: http://www.bot.nhmus.hu/enmlio.html . They look pretty good. All you really need to freeze-dry at home is a freezer and a source of vacuum.

I thought I read something about hippies selling mushrooms in honey...but I think freeze drying is the only way to go.

I?m interested in preserving them for exhibition purposes only.
This means that :
* Their appearance should be altered as little as possible & that they should be kept in something allowing them to be viewed
*There should be preserved for a lot of time. Most food techniques are not suitable!
*There are no plans for eating them, nit at all.
It seems that freeze drying is the best option , thanks Psilo. An absorption of resin solution sound promising enough after that. Nice idea ChuangTzu but I think that freeze drying is not so easy if you don?t have access to lab equipment.

There was an interesting news article recently (Click here) regarding a man who preserved for posterity a 13 inch, 1 pound morel that he found. He had a taxidermist freeze-dry and then lacquer the mushroom. You may want to contact either one of them.
I also saw a technique using silica-gel. You place the mushroom standing upright in a small container and add the silica all around the specimen until it has completely covered it. Then after a few days the mushroom will be completely dry as well as keeping its' original shape.

The conclusion is that freeze drying and then giving it resin/ laquer is probably the best method. On the other hand it?s not so easy. Special equipment is required
Veggie I am not sure about the shape after the silica gel method but it should be much easier.
Thanks for your ideas guys
