seed starter as a casing substance?
    #4254950 - 06/04/05 04:19 AM (12 years, 10 months ago)

I looked a ta bag of ferry morse seed starter and saw that the ingredients were: peat moss, perlite, composted softwood bark fines, lime for ph balance and a wetting agent to help w/initial water absorbtion. What do you guys think? would it work for casing?

Yes, it will work...you dont really want the perlite in there but i dont think it would do any harm

The wood bark will be worse then the perlite. I try an find a seed starter/potting mix without wood...mainly just peatmoss and verm, and just about all contain lime and a wetting agent..perlites fine though, most have that too..try and get the ones with the fewest ingredients and just make sure its not fortified with any NPK, minerals or anything to feed the plant. You will need to add chunky verm to the mix 30-50%, and I'd also add some powdered oyster shells.

Would the bark present contamination issues?

My local meijer and wal-mart carry several different brands between them, I just cased with Hoffman's seed starter. You should be able to find some without wood or perlite added with a little looking in the garden center
