mycelium is now on stage!
    #4253367 - 06/03/05 08:34 PM (11 years, 11 months ago)

Ive had 4 jars basking in the warmth of the incubator (27deg. c) for nearly one month. so far only one jar is kickin' off with some mycelium growth, (and looking nice) - Im in no rush other than Id like to get another batch on the go, but Ive got a couple questions-

-since its been about a month and Id say in the one jar thats got some growth its at 30% colonization, any recommendations or precautions? [the jar has open holes (w/dry verm) and has been upside down]

-id like to treat this one real nice since its the only success so far

-if I move the 3 dormant/ultra slow jars out of the incubator and add 3 or 4 new jars- will contamination be a big issue? no contams so far and all have the dry verm layer

many thanks

Don't turn the jar upside down unless and until the jar is ~80% colonized and stalled. The myc need the CO2 to continue the vegatative growth stage. I would say that if it has been a month and they are that slow that your water content was off with your jars. BRF jars take a while.. but not That long.

Post some pics.

wow, that is a long time for 1/2 pint brf cakes to colonize. is there any kind of smell in your incubator. what is the ratio that you used to mix your jars? 2:1:1, verm, brf, water.
something has to be wrong, can't tell you what it would be though.
how did you inoculate?
peace

i average about 15 to 20 days for 100% colonization on brf in 1/2 pinters
not sure

tried to snap some pics but nothing really turned out..

but Q- I think youre right, Im fairly certain the water content is off because I left the lids on loose while steaming (PFtek--"...with the lid bands loose so that the steam can penetrate the jars quickly")

seems to me better to keep them tight, was playin it safe for the first run

no smell from the incubator

the jar that is colonizing seems to be going pretty good as far as rhizomorphic growth, thick strands-

might just let that one run for awhile see what happens

many thanks!

I know that lots of people say not to do it.. but when I PC I put some breatheable tape over the holes to make sure water stays where it is supposed to. It will kinda melt on.. but you can peel it off later. It's not needed.. but I like to do it.

For the jar that is going well: keep it upright and at ~84 degrees. I wouldn't be worried about contamination in your incubator. Just clean your hands. If you want, take a coffee filter and rubberband it around the jar.. it adds another layer of protection.

If your going to do more jars you might want to consider trying WildBirdSeed(WBS). It is fairly easy to get water content right .. it colonizes faster than BRF cakes and it gives a lot more nutrition.
This is a good tek to follow:

Good Luck
