Autoclaving Casing Substrate
    #4252826 - 06/03/05 06:08 PM (11 years, 5 months ago)

I have access to an autoclave. I was wondering if anyone has experience with using the autoclave (instead of boiling or pressure cooking). I know how to use it and all but I was wondering if there is any reason I shouldnt autoclave my pf 1/2 pint jars (substrate) and 60/40 vermiculite/ coco coir casing mix??? Thanks guys/ and gals

no reason that you shouldn't. i use one all the time to sterilize my jars, pf and wbs. as far as the casing mix there are varied opinions on that one. i go with just pasturizing it just like the h poo. some say you don't even need to do that and have good results.
for the pint jars of wbs i run a 30 min cycle and haven't had a contam in them. some have said to run them much longer like 60 or 90 mins. that is up to you though.
How big is the one you have access to? i can fit 48 1/2 pints or 24 pints in the one i use, no probs yet.

If you sterilize casing soil, it tends to smell worse during colonization since it will then (ironically) explode with more bacteria than if it were just pasteurized, but doing such works just fine.

dont cook your soil like that, its too much,. Just nuke it for five-ten mins

Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.

I always have PCed my casing mix and never will do any different now. Fill up bags and jars and just keep them until ready and pop one open. I PC for 30-45 minutes at 15 PSI.

When your using a professional auto-clave make sure to check the temp/PSI settings. I haven't seen one yet that is not adjustable. And for most industrial/medical uses they are set quite a bit higher than what you want for substrates.
