 What's with this poker fad?

I guess it's probably just in America but it's like everyone I know has started playing poker as the main socialization activity in the past year or two. Every bar's got a poker night now. People are hosting poker tournaments in their houses. And every network on teevee has a daily poker show. Even the queers are getting in on it as Bravo has celebrity poker.
What is the significance of this? Is America feeling like gambling or something to do with being on top of the world and unsure about it's power waning. When is the poker fad going to die?

Seriously, I'm so sick of everything poker-related right now.
I don't know about you guys but around this city there are signs up for a petition to make Poker an OLYMPIC SPORT.
To whoever is the mastermind of that campaign:

Seems like the fad is dying already to me...
I don't see the poker fad as that bad because to be good at poker you have to think about all scenarios, any fad that requires people to think I'm all for.

poker is alot more interesting than most sports and games and everyone likes the idea of getting rich by playing a card game. I play it alot and i enjoy it even when i lose.
Here's one of the reasons it's so big these days. It's kind of like the way a young kid sees kurt cobain playing guitar and then goes out and buys a guitar and starts playing all the time. These days with all the poker publicity kids see someone like john dagastino win a million dollars while looking all slick and they start playing poker all the time. Being a pro poker player has that cool rock star kind of vibe and appeal to it, and everybody just eats it up.

Thank god for this poker fad.
I've been living for like 5 months on $2000 without a real job because I play poker online and with stupid kids in town like 10-15 hours a week or so.

We play poker on thursday nights. Its usually good fun...
But poker on tv is just escessive. I cant watch that, its fun to play tho.

nothing's wrong with poker.
it's just if you only started playing regularly in the last year or two then you are participating in a fad (kind of like a sheep).

Been playing poker since I can remember. I could put together a decent poker hand before I could read. Its always been second nature to me. And I grew up in Las Vegas so gambling has always seemed normal to me. The only sign I can see that poker has become a fad is that it is on TV now. Otherwise I have been surrounded by it all my life.

yeah, i can imagine. Everyday all the young guys at work are telling their latest poker stories. It's just getting to me. i've watched ESPNs World Series of Poker a few times and it looks like quite a lot of the good players are from Vegas, as one would expect. I'm sure that it being held there probably also has something to do with it.

Hell yes it has. Poker has been an American pasttime for a very very very long time now. Illegal gambling has been going on for years upon years. A lot of times you don't see it because games are kept very low key and underground... except for games at Casino's of course. I grew up around a lot of poker playing so it's nothing new to me either.

ya i play poker with my buddies all the time but it has always bneen like that since we were in hghschool. but i do belive the poker fad is fading but the ONLINE POKER is booming

Wow, damn. This shit's up in Canada too. What gives?
My little bro's actually getting pretty intense into poker, he's good at everything. At first I thought it was a little weird when they bought this velvet mat and chips, but when I saw the dough he raked in it actually started to become appealing. It's a damn fun game though, but I hardly remember how to play. I want to start up but I'd probably feel like a tool. I'll wait till it dies down.

My 16 year old brother is getting good at poker also.  I guess its like a gift and a curse. You can make some good money but in one hand where you think youv got it won you can lose your whole bank roll.

I've actually been playing poker since I was 13, usually just with my parents and their friends. However, I had been trying to put together my own poker night with my friends for years but no one knew any games and didn't want to play NOW all they can talk about is holdem this and holdem that. I'm loving it, finally get to playpoker with my friends.
As for the fad, its just cause "anyone" can be the next moneymaker and win a million just by playing online. They think it takes no skill or talent to play... these are the people you want playing, much easier to take their money. I have no illiusions of being the next world champ or anything but its still fun to watch and play.
