Adventures in Geekdom: Episode 29 - The Home Stereo System
    #4250471 - 06/02/05 10:17 PM (18 years, 10 months ago)

I have a vision.

in each room, you have a control panel.

on this control panel, you can choose from 4 possible
feeds, power on or off, control the gain and/or volume,
adjust bass and treble as well as balance and fade among
the speakers in the room.

each room will have 2+ speakers installed flush with the
ceiling to deliver sound to the room.

each room would also have an RCA, mini or wired input jack.

each room would be assigned a channel throughout
the house.

master bedroom channel 1
office channel 2
kitchen channel 3
living room channel 4

each room would have sort of sound source
plugged into their input jack.

hopefully you see where I'm going here.

say I'm in the bedroom and I have my record player
on, but I want to listen to it in the kitchen, where I
don't have a record player. instead of blasting music
through the whole house, I could simply pipe it into
the wall in my bedroom (channel 1) and then from
the kitchen console, I can select my channel, adjust
my volume and my bass and cook away.

additionally, all the rooms will have their control
panel off so the music is isolated to the needed room.

but, if someone in the office decided they wanted to
listen to their ipod, or someone in the living room wanted
to watch a dvd in uber surround sound, then they can
simply select the appropriate channel on the wall panel
and get er done.

wtf?!

am I crazy?

how many different places would I have to go for the
components to do this?

GEOKILLS

sell me some speakaz, nigga!

hook it all up to a computer network, have panels and keyboards (basically could be accomplished by low-end linux boxes) in each room, hooked up through the tv if it exists - then you can have a huge collection of tv shows, movies, and music on your home-network, and tap into it whenever and wherever!

I have this its nice.

I have control pads in each room you can choose from Radio, CD, DVD, SAT, or the hard disc music system. The pads arent digital though so if you are selecting a CD from the changer you need to know which one.

also a room can 'lock' the source out so someone cannot grab the CD while you are listening to it.

what type of components are you using?

I have no components yet.

I need to figure out where to go for this shit and how
hard it's going to be to wire up the wall consoles in
the room after the fact. I mean...it's easy to shove
the wife up into the crawl space to install some speakers
in the cieling, but wiring the house, installing wall panels
for control as well as in/output could mean a lot of
dry wall patching...

any suggestions for hardware...?

the other option, not quite as fancy is to have
a single control panel mounted centrally and
have that control each room, but then you don't
have in-room controls...

bedroom closet.

my wife's wardrobe is like cancer spreading throughout
the closets in my home.
