I'm thinking of getting a job at a horse farm
    #4250821 - 06/03/05 01:46 AM (11 years, 6 months ago)

Shoveling shit, cool beans!
Actually I would not mind it. There are a few cool horse farms out here and I know the owners. They've let me search their fields for mushrooms for years. I would love to feed the horses and learn how to work with them. And of course I'm built for physical work in the Georgia heat bailing hay. Been at it even in the swamp. I was thinking of going back to waiting tables, but I'm thinking otherwise.
I'd probably even take truckloads of horse manure and fertilize my lawn, as well as accidentally dropping some pann seeds on there . And I would be thankful for my knowledge of horses! For I will surely own a few cows and horses.
I'd say this is right in my books.

Just to warn you, the job fucking sucks. I cleaned stalls for 2 years. I got good pay and I got in really good shape, but it was not worth it at all.

It's pretty sad. He is a good guy though.

Oh ya redstorm, I can imgine why your type would not be built for the job, but I revel in it. Each one will come to his own calling. I think the fresh air is somewhere in my nature.

Oh, I loved being outdoors. I did construction all last year and I liked that much better than scooping stables. It's not the shit that gets to you, it's the piss. The ammonia smell is unbearable at times.

I've delt with plenty as it is. The ups verse down would sit right with me.
But so would any other job..
Shit! now that I am out of school for the summer and deciding not to mow lawns for a living, I need to land a job soon.
There are so many choices, and my potential can bear in all of them.
Sometimes it just sets me back.

Or course I wouldn't 'like' it! But I also don't like the constant pressure of fine dining service, I also don't like the smell of Bermuda grass on the forth mowing one summer day. I also don't like waking up and taking a breath of the fine pollen infested air.
What I would like, is harnessing the power of this powerful animal, and getting paid to do so. This servant of the ancients, and modern day outdated work force. The horse has always been my ally, and I can reign control over the animal. A lion would slay a horse, if only it stays sharp of mind.

I have to admit I would LOVE a job shoveling horse shit.

But then I'm a big horsy person anyway.   I rode for about 8 years.

Also, most places won't let you touch the horses in case they get nervous and kick you or trample you. You can pet them while they're in their stall, but I wouldn't count on much more contact than that.

I say you go get the job, and you can quit if you hate it.

What? You must not know much about horses. The only reason they would get nervous is because YOU are nervous( generally).
I've walked into a field of horses and had 15 of them trample towards me at full speed just to stop right before me, circling around me sniffing me. It's all about standing strong, and keeping your metal. You bet if I turned and ran they would have cut me down...
After that, and after you 'meet' a horse, you can count on them keeping their cool as long as you do.

Hey man,
I still do lawn and landscape. But I do it part-time.
I decided to take another job this summer until school in the fall.
It was the right choice for me.

That's not true. I've almost been trampled when I was minding my own business. The horses were fucking with each other and decided to chase each other right towards me. I had to jump on a giant roll of hay so I didn't get killed.

They'll kick you anyways, even if you aren't nervous. If they are spooked for any number of reasons (weather, you smell different, etc.), they'll bit or kick you.
