What is your favorite Ochem reaction?
    #4250239 - 06/02/05 11:23 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

This is a toughie, but i'd have to say Grignard reactions... they are so cutting edge.

I havent taken organic... I have taken 3 semisters of "regular" chem though, real fun class!

Grignards are hardly cutting edge. They've been around for ages. They are useful as hell though.

I think my favorite at the moment, aesthetically at least, would have to be the Diels-Alder reaction.

It isn't really organic, but one of my favorite reactions is the mix of conc nitric acid and sodium thiosulfate. Be cafeful, the reaction is slow to start, but quickly gets violent for a few seconds and can spray nitric acid everywhere. This is how I won a free shower in the chem lab once. (Don't do this in a test tube. If you do this in a test tube, make sure you don't point the tube away from yourself towards the guy standing next to you. If you do, he will find that nitric acid turns his skin yellow and smokes as his skin burns. He will also find that the lab showers are very cold and will probably be pretty upset with you afterwards... along with the cleaning crew... the showers don't have drains and put out a lot of water very quickly.) The result of the reaction is a beautiful sulfer polymer.

The B-Z reaction is beautiful empirically and visually.

B-Z stands for Belousov-Zhabotinsky. It's unique in that instead of steadily moving towards a single equilibrium state, it oscillates back and forth between two such states. Before this "chemical oscillator" was discovered, it was thought that such a reaction could not exist.

If you do the reaction in a beaker, the whole beaker regularly changes color from yellow to clear and back again, over and over. In this case, we say that the reaction is oscillating in time. However, if you do the reaction in a thin layer of fluid trapped between two glass plates, then a beautiful pattern emerges of concentric or spiral waves of color change passing through the fluid. Here, the reaction is oscillating in both time and space.

The oscillation period is about two seconds depending on temperature. Here's a cool video of it occurring in real-time:

ooo diploid you win!

The closest I came to meltdown was a few weeks ago. I didn't cool my solution before doing an acid-work up and I got precisely that.... acid worked up all over my experiment.

The worst stuff to work with is AlCl3, that shit reacts with water in the air to produce HCl instantly and its a very fine powder and I always end up getting a big whiff when measuring it out. Just terrible.

> Did you have to get naked before you got in it?

There wasn't really time. My professor was showing me this nifty reaction he had discovered a few years back. He had a test tube 1/4 full of sodium thiosulfate and a small beaker full of conc nitric acid. He poured a bit of the acid in to the test tube... and nothing happened... we wait a few more seconds... nothing... so he goes to pour more acid into the mixture when it lets loose... violently.

He was taken by surprise and jumped, tossing the entire beaker of nitric acid at me. I had goggles on and it missed my face, but covered me from the neck down. The professor didn't realize what he had done, and handed the beaker and test tube to me so he could wash the few drops of acid that he spilled onto his hands. A few seconds after I took the glassware, I noticed the acid was starting to burn... and smoke... I think it was the sight of smoke rising from skin that made me realize it was time to rinse off... fast.

I ended up tossing the clothes I was wearing while in the shower, not before, and wore a lab coat home. The next day when went back to get my wallet out of my old clothes, the fabric had turned an odd orange color and fell apart like rotten lace when touched.

A very humbling experience... and a quick way to learn that you need to watch not only yourself in the lab, but be aware of what others are doing that might be dangerous as well... even if you are an undergrad and they hold a phd. Even phd's make mistakes...

I hear those showers really drench you fast. They're usually hooked up to an airhorn too so to let everybody know that you just got screwed. Anyhow, what happened to the professor that splashed you with the acid?

> I hear those showers really drench you fast.

They do release an amazing load of water.  I don't remember how many gallons per minute the thing put out, but I remember being impressed with the number... something like 30 gallons per minute if memory serves. (A normal shower puts out around 5 to 8 gallons per minute.)  They also don't have drains... which I had never noticed.  They don't want whatever contaminate getting into the sewer system, I was told.

> They're usually hooked up to an airhorn too so to let everybody know that you just got screwed.

This one didn't.

> Anyhow, what happened to the professor that splashed you with the acid?

Nothing that I know of... it wasn't like I pressed charges or anything... accidents happen and I should have been paying more attention, wearing an apron, standing further away, etc...  Chalk it up to a learning experience.  The bright yellow skin for a month afterwards was kind of fun though.  I looked like I had taken a dip in a pool full of sodium fluorescein dye.  I told people not to worry, it was just yellow fevor and should't be that contageous....

I'm currently drooling over reactions done using yeasts and such.
It's such pimp shit.
