question bout the tightness of lids on PF tek
    #4249910 - 06/02/05 10:04 PM (11 years, 6 months ago)

sup...

I'm a newbie & soon i will knock up twelve 1/2 pint jars, i have all the supplies ready. however, i read that while i pc the jars i should leave the lids a little loose and wrap tinfoil on top so no water goes in the jars.

But after i take the jars out, do i tighten the lids before i inoculate them let them colonize? Or leave it loose to increase gas exchange during colonization?

Also, i made 4 very small holes on each lid with a very thin nail tip and hammer. just big enough for the needle to fit thru.

Do the sizes of the holes on the lid of the 1/2 pint jar affect the gas exchange during incubation?

thanks for any info..  i'll post some pics later with my progress...

Make the lid snug, but not super tight.

it really is not an issue doing pf tek. just don't tighten them things on really tight. see the holes in the lid allow for any gas exchange to take place, not building internal pressure. if you were using jars without holes then you should leave them a little loose.
peace

They don't have to be loose during the PC run, the holes will provide all the equilization necessary during pressure buildup. Put lids on snugly, cover with foil or whatever you do, and pressure cook them. That's it.

yeah... i think what happened is that we must of posted at the same time. But thank you both for your replies. i'm clear now as far as that goes..

This first time i wanna experiment a little. I wanted to inoculate 12 jars. Then crumble and case 6 of those jars with the 50/50 tek, then cake the other 6 jars in a separate fruiting chamber. As for the 6 cakes i was planning to dunk and roll 3 of them and compare the results to the 3 non-dunked cakes.

do you think using wbs and casing would yield much bigger fruits?

anyways.. i'll keep you posted on the progress..

thanks again
