Saving my casings.....
    #4249100 - 06/02/05 06:37 PM (11 years, 6 months ago)

I have recently come to learn that my casings are far from adequate [despite what I've read]. One has already gone through a flush so it's a lost cause [though it will still produce] but I have two more that are coming up nice. They are starting to come in even, and I was wondering if I could help these casings out by throwing something on top? More vermiculite is an option, but I think I remember reading that peat moss can be used on top of a casing like mine [1" verm/cake/1" verm] to improve on it. However I don't remember any mention of pasteurization/sterilization [not sure which it would be].

Anyways, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Save, as in how? If your casings are producing thin, weak flushes then the only thing you can do is try to improve next run. Thick substrate depth and a good casing layer, and keep the casing plenty moist. Most casings run out of oomph early from lack of nutrition and lack of moisture. Correct those problems and there is your answer. Hope that helps.

Adding more casing material doesnt do anything. You need to do every step as good as you can, from the start. Not to much or to little of anything. If you give more info on what your doing, and what has happened we may be able to help further.

Forgive my ignorance Diver, but how is he supposed to correct the nutrient level with casing? The casing does not possess any nutrients to begin with.

You know I think you da man, so don't take this the wrong way.

Perhaps there is something I'm missing.

Hey Wronguy,

I don't really understand what he's asking, I assumed it to be "My casing is producing poor flushes, will adding more casing fix it?"  Maybe flushes themselves aren't the problem, I'm unsure though.

If that is indeed the question, I'm trying to offer advice on how to correct it, i.e. adding casing material isn't the answer here.

No clue what this is about though.

I hear you. I didn't really understand what his needs were either.

I guess I wasn't clear.

I have one casing in a terrarium that's gone through a flush [and it was shitty]. I have two more that I started recently that I will start pinning soon. All the casings were done the same [1 inch of vermiculite on the top and bottom], and they're not deep enough. I want to know if adding more casing material on top will be beneficial, and if so what would be best? My pans are shallow so I only have about an inch of space to work with.

Somebody in another thread told me I'd need at LEAST 4 inches! And bits of mycelium started showing after a day.

WAY to much casing mix. Thats why your doing shitty. Casing mix doesnt add nutrients, you need more substrate. You need about 2 inches of substrate and only 3/4" casing layer (you only really need one on top too, but 1/2" on the bottom is ok too).

>The casing does not possess any nutrients to begin with.

Yes it does. When diver says the casing needs more nutrients (or water), he doesnt mean the casing layer, the entire casing. The substrate is part of the casing, so the casing does have nutrients..just not the casing layer.

Well fuck. Luckily I have 2 other jars almost ready to go!

I had about an inch of substrate on these ones, but I guess next time I'll just double up.
