what's the point of doing anything?
    #4248829 - 06/02/05 05:40 PM (12 years, 4 months ago)

What's the point of doing anything, or accomplishing anything if you're just going to die one day? Anything or anyone that your actions may benefit is going to die eventually too. So there's no point in trying to do anything, much less improve something. Why don't you just kill yourself right now, because all your thoughts and actions are for naught.

Have a shitty day!

because doing something can bring some pleasures that not doing anything can't

But what's the point of pleasure? Living for pleasure makes us nothing but slaves to neurological rewards like dopamine and serotonin. This is ultimately no better than suffering. We just like it because it feels better. But ultimately there's no point to it.

Because you are simply the evolutionary product of billions of years trying to pass on your DNA and, by your survival, be a testament to its stability.

That will die one day also, but luckily humans evolved in such a way that they're tremendously selfish and short-sighted so it's not a problem.

Why ask why? It's only the product of evolution that allowed you to ask what's the point of doing anything anyway. There is no truth or meaning to any of this, you are just passing time along to the next generation.

Any attempt to understand why we do anything when looking at it like we have any importance will confuse the issue with arrogance. We're just sets of molecules moving around by the laws of the universe with no purpose or direction, unless you consider the arrow of time a signpost.

the pleasure is to feel it. An organism likes certain chemicals, that's all

another reason I can think of is because humanity lives on, you are not living and working for yourself, but for humanity

An organism IS certain chemicals. That's all it is.

Humanity lives on, but just like you it will die off and its footprint will be washed away, never to be seen again. Life is just as useless and finite as our individual existence.

That's one way of looking at it. Here's another. If you choose to be happy instead of unhappy (I'm saying you have a choice, at least to some degree.)On does things and accomplishes things for fun or joy or pleasure.

Yes your thoughts and actions end. But right now you are here. You can choose to some extent what that now will be like, when you die, well no one seems to be able to prove what that will be. You can say there is nothing or you can choose a happy afterlife. It's mindplay.

i believe the meaning of life is to realize that life has no meaning and thus feel peaceful.

Humanity will not last. Its existence is pointless as is yours. Our motivation to improve ourselves and others is strictly biological instinct to propogate the species. Abandon all hope.

Nothing, but why did you make this post? (same 'reason'?)
the drive is the reason, and the cause is the effect of what it gives? :P

but when you totally give up everything, all sense of desire and meaning, the question of what is the meaning no longer arises. things just are and that's it.

What does that have to do with longevity of humanity?

I am a biological being that decays over time and in theory can not live for ever, humanity in theory can live for ever

and what kind of instincts do you wish for? we are biological, so all our motivations are biological. Would a "purple" or "dusty" or "insturmental" motivation give you hope in humanity? What adjective do you need?
