Spawn to h/poo question.

So i ordered 10 lbs of pre-pasterized h/poo from tennstud. I an planning to spawn 4 qts to that in a single tub and case in 50/50+. Just a few questions.
1) Do i need to incubate because i know that the poo generates its own heat. 2) When i case it do i have to break it up or just add the caseing material to the top of it. 3) How big of a tub should i get for the 10lbs of poo cased in 50/50+.

you might want to go 2 12 quart containers 5 pound each 2 quarts of spawn to each don't break it up just case right over it. depends on room temp if your high 70's low 80's might not be needed if lower than that i would incubate at 80 to 81

I would also do 2 12 quart containers, 5 pounds of poo in each with 1.5 quarts of spawn mixed in, and then .5 quarts of spawn as a top layer. Cover and keep at 75-80 (80's probably better if you put in 2 containers, if you put all 10 in one, 75 would be better probably). Then in 5-7 days it should be done...when it is fully colonized just cover it with the casing mix (3/4" is pretty good IMO) and cover again (cover casings with tin foil with a few holes for incubation) and incubate at 75-80 for 1-3 days (depends on aggressivness of myc, casing thickness, moisture and many other things) until myc starts poking through then lightly patch any dense myc areas and fruit it.

not to hijack, but...
if someone had 5 lbs would that be good for 2 6 quart containers?
it would be mixed with 3 pints of colonized BRF in each 6 qrt container.

That sounds fine...mix it 2 pints per container and put 1 pint on top per container.

Not to hijack, but what would the chances for success be with using say 1 pint for 5 lbs.. Would it just take longer to colonize and be more susceptible to contam?

1 pint on top? I thought all the colonized jars were broken up and mixed in with the poo, and then it was covered until the top colonized, and then cased.
If you put a jar on top of the jar/poo mix, then it looks colonized already, right?
I'm confused now...

Well then how do you know when it's done colonizing if it's all covered with the spawn (white mycelium)? I thought you could tell it was done when it was colonized on the top, but if the top is covered by colonized spawn before you even incubate it, how do you tell when it's done?

I use taped clear containers, sweater boxes. I peel back a little tap and take a look. It really should be done in 10 days, 14 at most.

I know hippiechick, I understand how long it normally takes. The problem I am having is this...
If you break up some of the colonized jar and put it directly ontop of the poo/jar mixture, how do you see when the BROWN poo has become WHITE with mycelium, if there is a layer of WHITE colonized jar covering up the poo/jar mix?

If you have the spawn well mixed into the substrate & top loaded a little heavy. When the top is 100% colonized, give it another 4 or 5 days for whats underneath to catch up.

Right, my tub is black. Cannot see the sides.
I'm gonna just do as agar said and wait 4,5 days after top is done.
And Hope it is ready I guess.
Also, I was thinking that 5lbs poo/WBS would be too much for a 12qt. No? I was thinking this would give you much more than a 4inch substrate. No?
